Pink eye is the common name for Conjunctivitis. When the outermost layer of the eye, the Conjunctiva, becomes infected, it becomes inflamed and is incredibly contagious. It can either be viral or bacterial. It can also be caused by an allergic reaction.

Common symptoms of pink eye include redness, swelling and watering of the eyes. You may also have a discharge, a sign of bacterial conjunctivitis.

To prevent pink eye, avoid those currently with the infection as it is incredibly contagious. Also avoid rubbing your eye. Never share contact lenses, as this can lead to infection. Practice good hygiene and wash your hands frequently. Use precaution around those with pink eye and wash surfaces with antibacterial spray that they may have come in contact with. If you go swimming, make sure to remove any contacts and wear goggles to prevent anything from becoming trapped in your eye.

If your pink eye is viral, it will go away on its own. Bacterial require an antibiotic. Pink eye caused by allergies can be treated with antihistamines or eye drops (specifically allergy ones). To alleviate symtoms, apply a wet towel frequently thoughout the day. DO NOT SHARE THIS TOWEL WITH ANYONE to avoid transferring pink eye to someone else.
