Ear Pain and Ear Infections

Ear pain can be a common problem but quite often short term. Quite commonly, in adults, ear pain can be “referred pain” meaning the pain is simply transferred to the ear from another problem. This can mean the true problem is arthritis in the jaw, high altitude pressure, buildup of wax, or a tooth or sinus infection.

To relieve this pain, place a ice pack or cold towel over the ear. Chewing gum or sitting upright can reduce pressure. If the cause is not a ruptured ear drum, ear drops can help relieve pain.

In the case that the pain is an ear infection, also called Otis, an adult should consult a doctor. Ear infections are frequent in children and they are also recommended to consult a doctor should pain last for more than a day. Sometimes an ear infection goes away on its own but not always so consult a doctor if pain worsens or other symptoms occur. There are seasonal causes for ear infections as well due to seasonal allergies, cold, or flu. Congestion can block ear tubes and be a major cause of ear infections.
