Why Does the Flu Cause Aches and Pains?

Though cough, sore throat, runny nose, and fatigue are all common symptoms, one of the clearest signs of the flu are sore joints and muscles. When are aches and pains simply a result of the healing process and when should you be concerned?

Use this guide for the cause and cure of body pain resulting from the flu.

What causes flu-related body aches?

One of the primary functions of white blood cells is to repair and rebuild muscle fibers that are damaged day-to-day. When infected with the flu your immune system diverts these cells to fight off the virus, leaving muscles sore and stiff. In addition, inflamed muscles and joints are a side effect of the chemical cytokines which is produced by white blood cells to destroy infected cells in the body.

When Should I Worry?

Debilitating pain and red, swollen muscles and joints are often signs of a larger problem. If you experience any of these symptoms seek immediate medical attention.

What Can I Do to Feel Better?

Sooth your pain and relax muscles with a warm bath or a heating pad. You can use over-the-counter acetaminophen or ibuprofen to relieve pain in addition to plenty of rest and hydration for overall wellness.
