Treating a Runny Nose

Got a case of the sniffles?  If your nose is running faster than a waterfall, and you’re constantly reaching for a tissue, you might be coming down with a cold.  A runny nose is the result of excess nasal mucus production, which leads to watery nasal secretions that discharge from your nostrils or drip into your throat.  While a bout of a cold or the flu is usually the culprit during this time of year, your runny nose could also be the result of seasonal allergies.

There are a few simple ways you can combat a runny nose.  Here’s how:

Drink plenty of fluids

Sipping lots of water, tea and chicken broth can help thin out your mucus and allow for it to drain from your sinuses.

Apply a warm compress

Moisten a washcloth with warm water and apply it to your forehead a few times a day to relieve nasal congestion and alleviate your runny nose.

Get steamy

You don’t have to go to your gym’s sauna to get a steam treatment.  Next time you’re suffering from a stuffy nose, try sitting in your bathroom with the shower running to all the steam to break up some of your mucus.  You can also try inhaling steam by holding your head over a warm bowl of water and covering your head with a towel.

Use a humidifier

Using a humidifier or vaporizer is another great way of keeping your nasal passages moist, breaking up your mucus, and adding moisture back into your environment.

Try a nasal rinse, spray, or drops

Using a saline rinse a few times a day can help stop a runny nose and make breathing a little easier.

Get plenty of rest

Not only will a good night’s rest give your body a chance to heal, it will also give you a much-needed break from blowing your nose.

How long will my runny nose last for?

A runny nose, usually a common symptom of a cold, will last for a few days.

Why do I have a runny nose when I wake up?

When you are suffering from allergic rhinitis, you may have bouts of sneezes when you wake up.  The drainage from a runny nose from a cold or sinus infection may be thick and cloudy/yellowish.
