What Is RSV? 5 Things You Need To Know

Child sick with a fever from RSV and parent getting child ready to get tested at AFC Urgent Care Torrington

RSV is a respiratory virus that causes symptoms like wheezing, runny nose, and low fever. Although the infection can be mild in some children, it can have serious consequences for others. RSV infects babies less than one year old more frequently than other age groups because they lack antibodies to ward off the virus.

With the recent surge of RSV cases in children and children hospitals filling up with cases of RSV, AFC Urgent Care Torrington has created a guide on RSV in children, how to get tested and how you can help prevent it!

What is RSV?

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a member of the Paramyxoviridae family. A mouthful, we know. It is a type of respiratory infection that affects the lungs. This can be mild to severe and is frequently seen in babies and young children. RSV is contagious and can easily spread from person to person through coughing or sneezing.

There are two types of RSV: RSV-A and RSV-B. Both types can cause respiratory illness but only RSV-B causes bronchiolitis which is an inflammation of the small airways in the lungs. If you do have RSV, you should look out for these symptoms.

What are the symptoms of RSV?

RSV symptoms range from “cold”-like symptoms to “flu”- like symptoms. The symptoms of RSV may include one or more of the following:

  • Fever
  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Runny nose
  • Wheezing or difficulty breathing

Can My Child Catch RSV From Me?

RSV is a virus that affects the respiratory system, and it is highly contagious. It is most commonly spread through contact with respiratory secretions, such as saliva, mucus, or blood, from an infected person. It can also be spread through contact with objects or surfaces that have been contaminated with the virus.

It can also affect adults, and especially those who are older and immunocompromised. So, make sure to plan ahead if you are going to have a holiday party this winter. You don’t want to bring RSV along with your tuna salad side dish.

How do I test for RSV?

Is there a test for RSV? There are a few tests such as the antibody test and the nasal swab test. Just like a COVID-19 test, the nasal swab test that’s specific for RSV will help determine if you or your child has it or not. Luckily for you, AFC Urgent Care Torrington offers the nasal swab test for RSV, with results returned in 36-48 hours. We highly suggest coming in to get tested during the first few days of symptoms as the amount of virus in your sample can decrease as the days go on making it harder to detect.

What is the treatment for RSV and how do I help my child recover?

Usually, symptoms may last up to 7-10 days. But if left untreated, or ignored your child may have a difficult time breathing and may need immediate medical attention at a hospital. At this time, children's hospitals are filling up, making it a serious threat to your holiday season and family gatherings.
