COVID-19 FAQs

COVID-19 FAQs and Procedures

At AFC Urgent Care Thornton, we understand that our patients have many questions about COVID-19. AFC Urgent Care Thornton is able to provide updates and testing for both the active COVID-19 virus as well as past infections. Our urgent care is open extended hours seven days a week to provide necessary testing and care, as well as employing enhanced cleaning procedures to protect our staff as well as our patients. In addition to deep cleaning our facility and disinfecting each room between patients, AFC Urgent Care Thornton allows patients to wait in the car until the physician is ready to see them to reduce exposure to others.

What is COVID-19? What resources can I use to stay informed and healthy?

COVID-19, also referred to as the novel coronavirus, is an upper respiratory infection initially detected in China in late 2019 that has quickly spread worldwide. For more information about the virus, including any updated symptoms and how the state is responding to the pandemic, please visit the CDC website and the Colorado Department of Public Health site

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

COVID-19 has made its way worldwide, with over 4.8 million cases in the United States, over 49,000 of which are in Colorado. The virus is spread through direct contact with infected surfaces, objects or individuals, as well as through community spread, which is when a patient is unsure of when they were exposed to the virus. Symptoms may vary from case to case and may include:

  • High fever (102 F or higher) or chills
  • Dry cough
  • Muscle and headaches
  • Recent, sudden loss of taste and/or smell
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Vomiting and nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Fatigue

Symptoms may range from mild to symptomatic to severe. Patients over the age of 60 and patients with compromised immune systems and chronic health conditions may be at higher risk for more serious and even fatal complications. Symptoms that require immediate care at the emergency room include consistent pressure in the chest, bluish mouth and lips and severe difficulty breathing.

What kind of testing is offered at AFC Urgent Care Thornton?

At AFC Urgent Care Thornton, we offer Rapid and PCR COVID-19 diagnostic testing as well as COVID-19 antibody testing. Each test has their own specific use when determining exposure to COVID-19. If you have questions, please ask the provider which test is right for you.

Swab testing is performed to diagnose the active COVID-19 virus in a patient. The swab is then brought to our partner lab for analyzing and results are returned within 2-5 days. Antibody testing is a blood draw performed to detect the presence of antibodies, an immune response formed after an infection has healed. Results are returned within 2-5 days. A positive result indicates past infection and exposure to the virus, while negative results indicate no exposure. However, you can receive negative antibody results while having the active virus due to the time it takes to develop antibodies.

AFC Urgent Care FAQs

  • Why choose AFC for Urgent Care?

With state-of-the-art centers and a professional medical team, AFC provides on-site X-rays, labs, procedures, and more!

  • What's the difference between AFC Urgent Care and emergency room services?

Urgent care is for medical conditions that require prompt attention but do not pose an immediate threat to your health or life. Here is a simple rule of thumb: if your medical issues(s) are life threatening, call 911, or go directly to a hospital emergency room. If not, an urgent care center such as AFC is an excellent alternative.
