Does Ear Pain Mean I’m Sick?

It is normal to feel aches and pains in your ears every once in a while. Seasonal allergies, a recent trip or a change in altitude are all common reasons for ear discomfort.

When you are experiencing lingering ear pain coupled with other symptoms, it may indicate that you have an ear infection. Ear infections are a common condition that can usually be resolved at home.

Our AFC Urgent Care Tyvola Road team explains more below, so read on.

How Do Ear Infections Make You Sick?

Ear infections work similarly to other infections in your body. You become exposed to a virus or bacteria, and if your body can’t initially fight it off, the infection will start to grow and cause symptoms. In this case, the symptoms start in your inner ear!

As the infection grows, it puts pressure on your eardrum, which can cause pain and discomfort. In addition, it can disrupt the drainage of fluid in the tubes in your ear. All of this works together to make you feel pretty miserable.

Symptoms to Watch For

  • Pain inside ear
  • Fever
  • Discharge coming from ear
  • Feeling pressure in your ear
  • Difficulty hearing

What Treatments Are Available for Ear Infections?

If you come down with an ear infection, don’t immediately panic! Our bodies are naturally well-equipped to handle most ear infections with the help of our immune systems. Rest and plenty of fluids will go a long way to helping you feel better in a matter of days. You can also certainly take some OTC pain medication to help with the discomfort!

Most people feel better in about three days, so if that is not you, come see us. Sometimes ear infections require a round of antibiotics to help clear up the infection. At this point, a visit with our care team should have you on the road to recovery in no time at all. Just be sure to take the whole round of antibiotics!
