Does urgent care treat wounds?

Urgent care can treat any wounds so long as they're non-life-threatening. If a wound is or could be life-threatening, then it's absolutely necessary to go to the ER (emergency room). A wound like an avulsion is life-threatening, but a wound like an abrasion isn't. Let's take a look at which place you should go to for each type and severity of wound:

  • Abrasions - Scrapes, like road rash; urgent care can handle common abrasions
  • Lacerations - Deeper cuts or minor tears in the skin, like a cut from a pair of scissors; urgent care can handle lacerations that are bleeding controllably, but only the ER can handle lacerations that are bleeding uncontrollably
  • Punctures - Small holes in the skin, like a hole caused by a nail; urgent care can handle punctures that don't damage an organ, but only the ER can handle punctures that damage an organ
  • Avulsions - Partial tearing away of the skin and tissue that's caused by a severe injury due to something like a car accident; only the ER can handle avulsions

You could choose to go to the ER for a minor wound, but urgent care is better for minor wounds because they can treat minor wounds without any wait time. Please remember, however, that the ER is necessary for major wounds, like ones that are bleeding uncontrollably, as only the ER is equipped to handle these wounds.

What does a wound care clinic do?

AFC Urgent Care Memphis is an urgent care/wound care clinic, so we offer treatments for minor wounds here. For example, we have bandages for scrapes, stitches for cuts, treatments and tetanus shots for punctures, and more. And if you need pain relief medication for your wound recovery, we can provide it too. An appointment isn't necessary for you to receive wound care with us.

Also, our clinic can treat diabetic wounds so long as the wounds are minor and non-infected. It's important to be careful about diabetic wounds, though, as they can be serious even if they don't seem to be. Diabetic wounds should be examined closely, and a diabetic patient should make a careful decision about whether to go to urgent care or the ER. Generally, so long as the wound is bleeding controllably and non-infected, so long as there's no damage to an organ, and so long as the wound isn't life-threatening in any other way, urgent care can handle it.

What type of doctor does wound care?

There's a specific type of doctor that handles wounds best: a wound care specialist. This type of doctor understands wounds, their severity, and treatments for them very well. You can find a wound care specialist at an urgent care/wound care clinic like ours.

With state-of-the-art centers and a professional medical team, AFC provides on-site X-rays, labs, procedures, and more!

  • What's the difference between AFC Urgent Care and emergency room services?

Urgent care is for medical conditions that require prompt attention but do not pose an immediate threat to your health or life. Here is a simple rule of thumb: if your medical issues(s) are life threatening, call 911, or go directly to a hospital emergency room. If not, an urgent care center such as AFC is an excellent alternative.
