Ankle sprain blog

Whether it happens during a weekend basketball game, a morning run, or a simple misstep, ankle sprains are among the most common injuries we treat at AFC Urgent Care Wichita.

While many people think of an ankle sprain as “just a twist,” it can actually involve torn ligaments that need proper diagnosis and care to heal correctly.

What Exactly Is an Ankle Sprain?

An ankle sprain occurs when the ligaments that support the ankle are stretched or torn due to sudden twisting, rolling, or impact.

Most sprains happen on the outside (lateral) part of the ankle when the foot rolls inward.

Common symptoms include:

  • Sudden pain after twisting the ankle
  • Swelling or bruising
  • Difficulty bearing weight or walking
  • Tenderness along the ankle joint
  • A “popping” sound or sensation at the time of injury

Grades of Ankle Sprain

Sprains are classified based on severity:

  • Grade 1 (Mild): Slight stretching or tiny ligament tears; minimal swelling
  • Grade 2 (Moderate): Partial tear; moderate pain, swelling, and instability
  • Grade 3 (Severe): Complete tear of the ligament; significant swelling and inability to bear weight

Knowing the grade helps guide the right treatment plan and recovery timeline.

When to Visit Urgent Care

You should see a doctor right away if you experience:

  • Severe pain or swelling
  • Trouble standing or walking
  • Numbness or tingling in the foot
  • Deformity or visible bone displacement
  • Pain that doesn’t improve within a few days

At AFC Urgent Care Wichita, we perform a complete exam and on-site X-rays to rule out fractures or more serious ligament injuries.

Treatment: The R.I.C.E. Method and Beyond

Most ankle sprains heal with early treatment and care.

The standard home approach is R.I.C.E.:

  • Rest – Avoid activities that cause pain.
  • Ice – Apply ice for 15–20 minutes several times a day.
  • Compression – Use an elastic wrap or brace to limit swelling.
  • Elevation – Keep your ankle raised above heart level when possible.

In clinic, we may also recommend:

  • An ankle brace or splint for support
  • NSAIDs or pain relief medications
  • Physical therapy to restore strength and flexibility
  • Boots or crutches for moderate or severe sprains

Preventing Future Sprains

You can reduce your risk by:

  • Wearing supportive shoes during exercise
  • Warming up and stretching before activity
  • Strengthening ankle and balance muscles
  • Avoiding uneven surfaces or risky movements
  • Using a brace if you have a history of sprains
