Flu Shots

The flu can take days or even weeks to recover from. Caused by the influenza virus, the flu affects millions of patients per year, with thousands hospitalized due to complications. In severe cases, the flu can be fatal. The most effective way to prevent catching the flu during its season between October and May is by getting an annual flu vaccination each fall. AFC Urgent Care Vernon administers flu shots seven days a week during our convenient walk-in hours.

What are the symptoms of the flu?

Symptoms of the flu include fever, chills, fatigue, headache, muscle aches, sore throat, congestion and nausea.

What does the flu shot do?

The flu shot introduces your body to a weakened strain of the flu, allowing it to produce antibodies to fight against the full-strength virus. It takes about two weeks to become fully effective and provides immunity against the flu virus for about six months, or the duration of one flu season. Because the influenza virus is consistently evolving, it is important to get a flu shot each year to maintain immunity.

Should I get a flu shot?

The flu shot is recommended for almost all patients ranging from six months to the elderly. If you have an egg allergy or previously experienced an adverse reaction to the flu shot in the past, you should consult with your physician before getting another flu vaccine. If you are considered high-risk for complications from the flu, you should get a flu shot early in the season to allow your body time to adjust to the vaccination. High-risk individuals include the elderly, pregnant women and patients with compromised immune systems and chronic health conditions.

Flu Shots FAQs

  • Why choose AFC for Urgent Care?

With state-of-the-art centers and a professional medical team, AFC provides on-site X-rays, labs, procedures, and more!

  • What's the difference between AFC Urgent Care and emergency room services?

Urgent care is for medical conditions that require prompt attention but do not pose an immediate threat to your health or life. Here is a simple rule of thumb: if your medical issues(s) are life threatening, call 911, or go directly to a hospital emergency room. If not, an urgent care center such as AFC is an excellent alternative.
