Why It’s Time to Get Your Annual Flu Shot

As the temperatures get cooler and the leaves begin to change, it is time for you to make preparations for another kind of season: flu season is underway. By getting your flu shot at AFC Urgent Care South Portland, you will be able to be immunized with plenty of time before the virus begins to spread throughout your community. Flu vaccinations are offered seven days a week for walk-in patients.

What is the benefit of getting a flu shot?

The flu shot is the most efficient and effective way of protecting your body against the influenza virus. The vaccine injects your body with a weak or dead strain of the influenza virus, which teaches your immune system to recognize and battle it. This will enable your body to defeat the virus before you begin to experience symptoms if you are exposed to the live virus. The flu shot will give you immunity for about six months, or the length of one flu season, and can reduce your chances of falling ill during the fall or winter.

When should I get the flu shot?

Most doctors recommend getting the flu shot between September and the end of October in order to give your body time to adjust to the vaccine. Antibodies take about two weeks to develop and make the shot take effect.  By getting the vaccine early in the fall, you will allow yourself plenty of time to adjust to the vaccine before the virus begins spreading to your school or office.

Should everyone in my family get vaccinated?

The flu vaccination is recommended for almost everyone. If you are allergic to eggs or have previously had an adverse reaction to a flu shot, you should consider alternative methods to prevent catching the flu. Other patients who may be considered high risk for more severe symptoms of complications from the virus should consult with their physicians about the timing for their flu shot and whether or not to get a second dosage for protection towards the end of flu season. High-risk patients may include:

  • Pregnant women
  • Senior citizens
  • Patients with chronic health conditions
  • Patients with weakened immune systems
  • Young children

What if I shouldn’t get a flu shot?

There are several methods of flu prevention you can take that will not only protect you from the flu, but other viral infections as well. Some of the ways you can stay healthy include:

  • Making sure you wash your hands frequently throughout the day with antibacterial soap and warm to hot running water. Alcohol-based hand sanitizer can be used as an alternative when soap or water are unavailable.
  • Wear a mask or protective face covering over your mouth and nose in public areas and avoid close contact with others, especially in crowds.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking enough water, sports drinks and soups to get nutrients. You should also make sure you get at least eight hours of sleep per night.
