COVID-19 Testing and FAQs
COVID-19 Rapid and PCR Testing in Andover & Lawrence MA
AFC North Andover offers on-site rapid testing (results within an hour), anti-body and PCR/swab tests for COVID-19. We highly advise that you consult with our staff to determine the most appropriate test for your symptoms and situation. Although we are accepting patients without prior appointments, online registration is strongly encouraged to speed up the paperwork and reduce in-clinic wait times.
Does my insurance cover testing?
COVID-19 testing is fully covered, with $0 cost to you, by ALL insurance plans in Massachusetts including Medicare and Medicaid if it is deemed medically necessary. If you believe that you were exposed to COVID-19, came into close contact with a COVID-19 patient, or are exhibiting any one the following symptoms then testing in these situations will very likely be covered: sore throat, difficulty swallowing, new olfactory or taste disorder(s), nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, pneumonia, runny nose, nasal congestion, unexplained fatigue/malaise, delirium (acutely altered mental status and inattention), unexplained or increased number of falls, acute functional decline, exacerbation of chronic conditions, chills, headaches, conjunctivitis, croup, or multisystem inflammatory vasculitis in children (some of the symptoms associated with multisystem inflammatory vasculitis in children include persistent fever and a variety of symptoms that may include abdominal pain, gastrointestinal symptoms, including nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, as well as rash)
What if I want to get tested anyway for peace of mind, convenience or for a COVID-19 related travel restriction?
If you don’t fit the medically necessary testing criteria for fully insured testing or do not have insurance we offer very affordable rates for testing. Please note that insurance policies will not cover COVID testing for air travel as it is considered as not medically necessary. However we can typically test patients at very short notice at very reasonable prices if they have an urgent flight to catch. The current pricing for testing is $110 for anti-body testing, $199 for PCR swab based testing and $139 for the rapid antigen 1-hour test. We strongly encourage you to discuss your condition with our staff to determine which test is appropriate for you and if your symptoms require urgent treatment. We remind you to always call 9-1-1 in case of emergencies.
If you need COVID-19 test results for travel out of country (or to certain other states with coronavirus related travel restrictions), we can also provide them. Please ensure to inquire about results and turn around times before finalizing your travel plans. It is your responsibility to check your destination’s requirements before you get tested. Many destinations, for example, will only accept a PCR test within 72 hours of travel. Some will accept it within 10 days of travel. Others will accept a rapid antigen test. We are unable to offer refunds if you order the test too soon, or order the wrong test. Our staff are unable to offer clear guidance on this as there are dozens of destinations, each of which have different requirements.
How to Book a COVID-19 Test
If you would like to book your test ahead of time on a particular time-slot of your choosing, you can Book a Testing Appointment Online. That way you spend less time filling out paperwork when you get to the clinic for your booked time. Depending on the test recommended for you, the results should be available within the hour (for rapid testing) or in a few days for antibody and PCR testing (depending on the lab). Please inquire about the current turn-around times and rest assured that we will call you as soon as your results are available. Please maintain self-isolation at home till you have received the results.
We offer a rapid test because they provide highly reliable results on the spot; however, they do produce more false negatives than the RT-PCR COVID-19 Test. Doing both tests is our way of ensuring that you get the most accurate results possible without having to put your life on hold.
That will ultimately depend on your insurance coverage. Presently, many people with insurance are able to get tested at no charge. If you’re uninsured, AFC’s cash pay prices are highly competitive – contact us for the details.
