How to Prepare for the Upcoming School Year

September 28, 2022

SUMMER IS OFFICIALLY OVER. Now that school is back in session, creating a checklist for your child's return to school is essential as a parent. Things can get quite overwhelming from back-to-school physicals, vaccinations, and other health-related school needs. To make things easier, we've crafted a list to make going back to school easier.

It's important to know that as children attended school from home, they had less exposure to germs and viruses that would help strengthen their immune systems. From COVID-19 to the upcoming flu season, we want your children to be prepared with up-to-date immunizations and cleared for fall/spring sports. Now that you have an idea of what we're going to discuss, let's dive in!

Immunizations in the Mission Viejo area

A vaccine is a biological preparation that provides active acquired immunity to a particular infectious disease. A vaccine typically contains a substance that resembles a microbe that causes a disease; this substance is created from a microbe's weakened or dead forms, its toxins, or one of its surface proteins. The best method for preventing many deadly diseases is vaccination. In California, most schools and daycare facilities require that your child be immunized.

In the State of California, vaccination requirements include the following:

  • Measles, Mumps, and Rubella
  • Whooping cough (Pertussis)
  • Polio
  • Diphtheria
  • Tetanus
  • Hepatitis B
  • Chickenpox (Varicella)

When checking off your back-to-school list, don't forget vaccinations. If your child's or young adult's school requires vaccines, know that we have them readily available at the vaccine clinic in Mission Viejo.

Back to School Physical

A physical, in part with vaccinations, is key to ensuring your child is heading into the school year with the peace of mind you both deserve. A back-to-school physical is precautionary and can help detect underlying health concerns and possible risk factors. A physical examination typically begins with a medical history questionnaire. If your child's school doesn't provide this, don't worry. We have you covered.

The medical history form includes questions about:

  • Medical concerns that run in the family
  • Medical problems and illnesses that you have, such as asthma, diabetes, or COVID-19
  • Previous hospitalizations or surgeries
  • Allergies
  • Past injuries history
  • Medication history

During the physical exam, our staff and state-licensed provider will:

  • Record your height and weight
  • Check your blood pressure and pulse
  • Vision check
  • Assess your heart and lung health
  • Evaluate your muscles, bones, and joint health

Plan the physical examination of your child at least four to six weeks before the start of the school year. Back-to-school physicals should be scheduled well before the beginning of the academic year or the school sports season to allow time to assess and address any issues.
