What Causes a Bacterial Infection?

April 30, 2021
When our bodies are fighting an illness, that illness could be due to a virus or to a bacterial infection. But what's the difference? Our team at AFC Urgent Care Castle Rock would like to share some insight. Read on as we take a look.

What Is the Difference Between a Bacterial Infection and a Virus?

It's really pretty simple—if your illness is caused by a bacteria, it's a bacterial infection. If there's no bacteria present, it's a viral infection, often called a virus. Depending on which type of illness you have, treatment will vary. Bronchitis and sinus infections can be either a bacterial or viral infection, which is why it is important to seek medical attention. Bacterial Infections
  • Whooping cough
  • Strep throat
  • Ear infection
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Tuberculosis

What Are Some Examples of a Virus?

The common cold and the flu are two common examples of a viral infection. These are infections that cannot be treated using an antibiotic. Since antibiotics help rid the body of bad bacteria, they are not effective when it comes to a virus. However, there are other treatment methods. Treatment for a Viral Infection
  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Drink lots of fluids.
  • Gargle with salt water.
  • Sip a hot beverage.
  • Take OTC medications as needed for individual symptoms.
