How Are STI’s Tested?

Getting tested for a sexually transmitted infection (STI) does not have to be complicated or uncomfortable. Whether you have symptoms, had a possible exposure, started seeing someone new, or just want peace of mind, an STI test can give you answers, even if you feel completely fine. Many common infections, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, and HIV, can be present without noticeable symptoms, which is why routine screening is a good idea even when nothing feels wrong.

At AFC Urgent Care Back Bay, we offer confidential STI testing in a comfortable, judgment-free setting. Our licensed providers can talk through your situation, recommend the right tests, and explain what happens next. You can walk seven days a week from 8 AM to 8 PM, with no appointment or referral needed. We serve patients in Back Bay, Downtown Boston, the South End, Beacon Hill, and Fenway, and more.

What Types of Tests Are Used to Diagnose STIs?

There isn't one test that checks for every STI. The right test depends on the infection your provider is looking for, your symptoms, and the type of sexual contact you've had.

At AFC Back Bay, STI testing may include:

  • Urine tests, often used to screen for chlamydia and gonorrhea
  • Blood tests, which may be used for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and sometimes herpes
  • Swabs, which can collect a sample from the genital area, throat, rectum, or a sore
  • A physical exam, if you have symptoms such as unusual discharge, genital irritation, pain, a rash, or visible sores

Your visit usually starts with a private conversation about your sexual health history, any symptoms, and any possible exposures. It can feel awkward to talk about, but being open helps the provider choose tests that actually fit your situation.

We can test for common infections including chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes, HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. If you aren't sure what you need, the provider will help you decide which screening makes sense.

How Long Does STI Testing Take and When Will You Get Results?

The visit itself is usually fairly quick, but how long it takes to get results depends on the test. Some results are available while you are still at the clinic, while others need additional laboratory processing.

AFC Back Bay uses the BINX IO system for rapid molecular testing of chlamydia and gonorrhea. Results for those two tests are typically available in as little as 30 minutes.

Other tests, including many blood tests and broader STI panels, may be processed through the clinic's on-site lab or sent out for additional testing. Before you leave, ask when to expect your results and how you will be contacted.

One important note: testing immediately after a possible exposure does not always catch every infection. Some STIs take time to become detectable, so your provider may recommend repeat testing after the appropriate window period.

What Happens if Your STI Test Comes Back Positive?

A positive result can feel stressful, but many STIs are treatable. Bacterial infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis can often be treated with antibiotics. Viral infections, including herpes and HIV, may require antiviral medication and ongoing care, but treatment can help manage symptoms and reduce the chance of passing the infection to someone else.

If your test is positive, the provider will explain the result, discuss treatment options when appropriate, and let you know whether follow-up testing is needed.
