The flu, also known as influenza, is a highly contagious infection caused by a series of strains of the influenza virus. The virus typically reaches epidemic status during the winter months and can be easily prevented by getting an annual flu shot from AFC Urgent Care Hillsdale each fall.

What are the symptoms of the flu?

Symptoms of the flu may include:

  • Fever
  • Body chills
  • Sore throat
  • Chest and nasal congestion
  • Fatigue
  • Stuffed and/or runny nose
  • Head and body aches

Who should get a flu shot?

The flu shot is recommended for almost all patients over six months old. Patients who have previously experienced an adverse reaction to a flu shot or have an egg allergy should consult with their physician about alternative methods of flu prevention. Certain patients and groups may be more at risk for developing more severe symptoms or complications. These patients should get a flu shot as early in the season as possible for immunity at the flu’s peak:

  • Seniors over the age of 65
  • Healthcare and childcare providers
  • Pregnant women
  • Young children
  • Patients with weak immune systems or underlying chronic conditions

When should I get a flu shot?

You should get your flu shot sometime between September and mid-October in order to make sure you are immune for the duration of flu season, which peaks between January and March each year.
