Stay away from Dehydration this summer!

It is summer time once again and although we can’t wait to get in the nearest body of water, sometimes we forget about the water inside our bodies. Our bodies are made up of 75% of water and require a lot of maintenance from us to keep them happy. When we fail to do this we get dehydrated.

Dehydration occurs when we lose more water than we are putting into our bodies. There are many ways we can get dehydrated. Kids 12 and under, Sport athletes and the elderly are the most susceptible to getting dehydration especially during the summer. The most common ways we get dehydrated are; not listening to our bodies when we feel thirsty, doing exercise with no liquids, being in high heats and consuming large quantities of salty drinks or alcohol.

Other forms include; pre-existing conditions such as diabetes, women during their period, a side effect of prescription medicine, having a low carb diet, a lot of stress. Some ways to tell if your dehydrated are; Your urine is a dark yellow, dizziness, and dry mouth, weakness in muscles, swollen eyes, fever and delirium.

If you are experiencing symptoms of dehydration you should drink fluids immediately that have no sodium. High forms of electrolytes help a lot or just drink some water. If untreated dehydration could lead too low blood volume leading to seizures, kidney problems, stroke. If you have severe symptoms of dehydration have someone take you to AFC Urgent care now!
