COVID-19 Rapid Testing FAQ

COVID-19 Rapid Testing FAQ

Q: How does the COVID-19 rapid test process work at AFC?

A: Getting your rapid test is a quick and easy process:

No Appointment is needed.

  1. At the day of your rapid test please make sure you have insurance and ID ready and register at the front desk.  If you are uninsured you must provide your social security number and ID to qualify for the federal program
  2. An AFC provider will perform and evaluation and a staff member will perform the test.
  3. Results will be provided shortly as soon as they are available.
  4. Please note there is limited availability per hour and you may experience a wait depending on the number of people requesting testing.

On the day you would like to be tested, register at the front desk, staff will verify information and triage. Once our staff is ready for the appointment we will contact you on the number provided to enter the building.

Q:  What if my family or more than 1 person needs a rapid test?

A:  You must register for each family member who needs a rapid test so that we can register it  in our system separately.

Q: What if I would like to have my rapid test on a specific day?

A: Come in on the day you would like to be tested.

Q:  Why is there a limited amount of tests per day?

A:  We have limited supply of rapid tests in each center which is why we have limited the number of tests that can be scheduled for the day.

Q: I am traveling and need my results asap!

A:  Please check with the airline you are traveling with or the country(location) you are traveling to ensure the Abbott ID Now is an accepted form of testing.   The Abbott ID Now is a real time (RT-PCR) molecular test that is the “Gold Standard of Rapid Testing"

Q:  How much does rapid testing cost?

A:  Currently your insurance carrier is covering the cost of testing.  If you have out of state Insurance, your insurance may not be accepted and you may incur a charge that you may be able to get reimbursed.    We will provide a receipt in such an event.

Q: What if I do not have insurance?

A:  AFC Urgent Care participates in a federal program to cover the cost of testing.  You must truly be uninsured or not be covered under another policy to qualify.   You will be asked to provide your social security number and a government issued ID (i.e. Drivers License, Passport etc)

Q:  Can I pay out of pocket?

A:  Yes you can.  Please call the center and we can take care of you immediately

Q: How does the Rapid Test work?

A: We have partnered with Abbott Labs using their ID Now diagnostic system, the Gold Standard in rapid testing utilized by the federal government. Abbott Labs is a leading FDA approved laboratory, with emergency use authorization from the FDA to administer the COVID-19 Rapid test. The ID NOW is a lightweight and portable instrument (the size of a toaster),  a molecular test which detects genetic material, and allows testing to occur on site in order to get rapid results. The ID NOW system processes a specimen in 15 minutes, which enables us to get you your results delivered to you within 30 minutes.

Q:  What do I do on the day of testing?

A:  Please register at the front desk by filling out the forms and providing your insurance and ID.   A member of our team will contact you and direct you to the area that we perform the rapid testing.   Once the sample is collected you will be directed to wait in your vehicle until the test has been completed.   Once the results are available,  our staff will either call you to retrieve your results or come out to meet you with them in your car.

Q: Is this a nasal swab test?

A: Yes. It is a non-invasive sample taken from the lower area of the nasal canal and we are as gentle as possible!

Q: Is the COVID-19 NAAT test and the PCR test the same test?

A: Yes. A Nucleic Acid Amplification Test, or NAAT, is a type of viral diagnostic test for SARS-CoV-2. A PCR test through nasal or throat swab is the most common NAAT technique for detecting specific nucleic acid in a sample.

Q: How long will it take to get results?

A:  You won’t have to wait long for results. You’re welcome to wait right in your car where a member of our staff will come to you with your lab results and your report and answer any remaining questions you may have within 30 minutes.

Q: Can I get the test even if I am asymptomatic?

A:  Yes, you do not need to be displaying symptoms in order to be tested or to get accurate results.   If you have been exposed it is highly recommended you wait a minimum of 48-72 hours or longer for an accurate determination.

Q: How effective are the results of the rapid test?

A: The Abbott ID Now is the gold standard of rapid testing utilized by the federal government, the airline industry and many institutions.

Q: If I get the rapid test do I still need to wear a mask, wash hands often and social distance?

A: A negative result is not a free get out of jail card, and does not discount you from maintaining safety precautions, as the test results are only effective up until the time of testing. Please continue to take normal precautions following the test and follow the CDC guidelines

Q: Are these COVID-19 rapid tests sufficient to use as proof of a negative test for employers?

A: Many employers have backed the Abbott ID Now as the system of choice but we recommend checking with your employer or agency.

AFC Urgent Care FAQs

  • Why choose AFC for Urgent Care?

With state-of-the-art centers and a professional medical team, AFC provides on-site X-rays, labs, procedures, and more!

  • What's the difference between AFC Urgent Care and emergency room services?

Urgent care is for medical conditions that require prompt attention but do not pose an immediate threat to your health or life. Here is a simple rule of thumb: if your medical issues(s) are life threatening, call 911, or go directly to a hospital emergency room. If not, an urgent care center such as AFC is an excellent alternative.
