What Are Camp, Sports, and School Physicals?

Camp, sports, and school physicals often referred to as pre-participation physical examinations (PPEs) are routine health evaluations designed to confirm that a child, teen, or adult is healthy enough to safely participate in activities. These exams are commonly required by schools, athletic programs, and camps throughout the Austin area.

Even when not required, a physical is strongly recommended. It provides a valuable opportunity to identify potential health concerns early, helping prevent injuries or complications during physical activity.

What to Bring to Your Visit

To ensure a smooth and efficient visit, please bring:

  • Any required physical forms from your school, sports league, or camp
  • A completed medical and immunization history (if available)
  • A list of current medications, including supplements
  • Documentation for any pre-existing conditions, especially heart-related concerns
  • A parent or guardian (for minors), to help provide accurate medical history

Having these items ready helps our providers complete your exam quickly and accurately.

What Happens During the Physical?

Your visit will include two main components: a medical history review and a comprehensive physical exam.

Medical History Review

This is one of the most important parts of the evaluation. Our provider will ask about:

  • Past illnesses or chronic conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, or seizures)
  • Previous injuries, including fractures, sprains, or concussions
  • Family history of serious health conditions
  • Allergies to medications, foods, or insect stings
  • Symptoms like chest pain, dizziness, or shortness of breath during activity
  • Mental health concerns, including anxiety or stress
  • Current medications and supplements

Physical Examination

After reviewing medical history, the provider will perform a full physical assessment, which may include:

  • Measuring height, weight, and body mass index (BMI)
  • Checking blood pressure and heart rate
  • Evaluating vision and hearing
  • Examining the heart, lungs, abdomen, and throat
  • Assessing posture, joint health, strength, and flexibility
  • Screening for hernias (when appropriate)

Depending on age and medical history, additional screenings such as basic lab tests may be recommended.

Why Physicals Are Important

Physical exams play a critical role in keeping participants safe. They help identify conditions that could increase the risk of injury or illness during physical activity. For example:

  • A child with asthma may need an updated inhaler plan
  • Someone with a history of concussions may need further evaluation before returning to sports
  • Underlying heart conditions can be flagged for additional testing

Our providers may also offer guidance on injury prevention, including stretching techniques, strength training, or proper hydration, especially important during Texas’ hot and humid summer months.

When Should You Schedule a Physical?

It’s best to complete your physical at least 6–8 weeks before the start of the season, school year, or camp session. This allows time for any follow-up care, additional testing, or specialist referrals if needed.

Waiting until the last minute can delay participation if a concern is identified, so planning ahead helps ensure a smooth start.

What If a Concern Is Found?

In most cases, physicals are straightforward, and participants are cleared without issue. However, if our provider identifies something that needs further evaluation, we’ll guide you through the next steps.

This may include:

  • Additional testing or lab work
  • Recommendations for treatment
  • Temporary restrictions until cleared
  • Referrals to specialists if necessary

The goal is always to prioritize safety while helping participants return to activities as soon as it’s appropriate.
