Why Does Air Quality Matter to Our Health?

As we enter a new month, it is time for new celebrations. One thing we should celebrate this month is Clean Air Month!

While we might not think much about it, the air we breathe—and its cleanliness—is extremely important to our overall health. Our team at AFC Urgent Care Northern Liberties wants you to understand the importance of air quality and what steps we can take to help clean the air we breathe. Read on as we offer some insight.

Why Is Clean Air Important?

Clean air is important for all of us. Not only does breathing in clean air make the experience of breathing better, it can also affect our health.

In fact, air pollution can cause our quality of life and life expectancy to be lower. Therefore, it is important for us to do what we can when it comes to caring for our air.

Negative Effects of Poor Air Quality

  • Eye, nose and throat irritation
  • Shortness of breath
  • Aggravated asthma and other respiratory conditions (i.e., bronchitis, pneumonia, emphysema)
  • Increased risk of cancer
  • Lung damage

What Can I Do to Help Improve the Air Quality?

One of the biggest things we can do to protect the air we breathe is watch our methods of transportation. Every time we drive our vehicles, we are contributing to the air pollution. Therefore, consider either walking or riding a bike to destinations, when possible.

Beyond outdoor air quality, though, it’s also important to pay careful attention to the air we’re breathing indoors.

Improving Indoor Air Quality

  • Choose cleaning products carefully.
  • Keep your HVAC unit properly maintained.
  • Regularly change out your air filters.
  • Consider placing houseplants around your home to filter the air.
  • Use a humidifier to add moisture to the air.
