It has been a tough winter for New Englanders, and it seems to be that Mother Nature is not letting up just yet! With a few snow showers in the forecast, and some frigid temperatures, it is important that you are aware of the symptoms of hypothermia and frostbite while being outdoors!

Hypothermia occurs when the body cannot keep itself warm and its internal temperature falls below 95 degrees. Symptoms of hypothermia can include uncontrolled shivering, poor muscle control, confusion and exhaustion.

Frostbite is most susceptible to your ears, nose, toes and hands.Symptoms of frostbite can include grayish-yellow or white skin, a hard, waxy feel to the area, and the area is cold to the touch. Severe frostbite can cause you to lose feeling in all of your extremities and require possible removal if it is beyond repairable.

Here are a few tips on how to prevent frostbite and hypothermia:

  • Stay indoors.
  • If you have to go outside, be sure to have as many layers as possible on. Extra gloves, jackets and socks are important in keeping your vulnerable parts warm.
  • Be aware. Temps are constantly fluctuating, making it possible for the temperature to drop at any minute. Be sure to listen to reports of freezing temperatures and always carry around extra winter clothing.
