Dehydration Prevention Tips

This past weekend on June 21st marked the first official day of summer which means the days are longer and the warm weather is here to stay! Temperatures are beginning to rise resulting in warm mornings, hot days and sticky nights – making it difficult to find a decent time to exercise or plan activities outside.

Dehydration is a common result of hot temperatures and your body not having enough fluids to balance you out. While making plans to enjoy the beautiful weather and get outside for the day, you should be extra careful while working out or being out in the sun all day.

Drink plenty of fluids such as water or sports drinks before, during and after your activities.

Limit your consumption of coffee, alcohol and caffeinated drinks. These types of fluids lead to excessive urine output, resulting in dehydration quicker.

Try to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water a day.

If you find yourself sweating profusely, find a new set of clothes to change into and drink a sports drink to replenish any minerals lost. Avoid overly-salty foods or salt tablets because they consume fluids, rather than replenish.

Wear lose/light colored clothing while outside. Dark colors such as black or navy attract the sun whereas whites or pale grays keep your body temperature cooler and let the air breathe into them.

Be sure to take extra care of your body the next few months while the temperatures are getting hotter. Drink a lot of fluids and use proper judgment ? if it’s too hot out ? avoid exercise as much as possible and stay cool!
