Check Off Back To School Physicals In 2022

July 27, 2022

Parent crossing off back to school physicals off her checklist by bringing her child to AFC Urgent Care Danbury for a comprehensive physical

Are you ready to send your little trooper off to school? You may have crossed off school supplies and clothes, but we hope that you remember to check off back to school physicals, too!

We can’t forget about updating yearly vaccinations or preparing for illnesses like the flu and COVID-19 this winter. Last winter, most of us had to cancel our holiday plans because of a spike in COVID cases. For this reason, AFC Urgent Care Danbury has you covered from head to toe on physicals for school, to play sports, vaccinations and to help with COVID-19 testing. Here’s what to expect at your child’s annual back to school physical.

It’s Time To Update Your Child’s Medical History

Physicals are very important for our little ones and teenagers because it builds a medical history for doctors to know what’s going on with their overall health.

For instance, do they need any prescription refills for medication like inhalers for asthma? Should I be worried about their cholesterol after eating too much ice cream this summer? These are all common questions and concerns parents have. And, that’s okay. A full physical covers that and will ensure that they’re on the path to staying healthy.

When being seen for a check up or for something urgent, your child will have a file with everything related to their past history. If there is ever an emerging health concern or issue, there is information to back it up.

Another good example would be immunizations or “vaccination” history. Kids and teens ages 0-18 require vaccinations to prevent some of the most dangerous diseases.

Renewing Your Child’s Immunizations During Their Physical

Is your child up to date on their vaccinations? Schools require a prerequisite of vaccinations before your child can attend. All 50 states and DC require vaccinations for diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis; polio; measles and rubella

We all have a different vaccine schedule to follow that helps build our immune systems to fight off against diseases that can pose a potential harm to our health. But, it’s not just about us. It’s about everyone else and making sure our little tater tots are not spreading their germs to others who are at higher risk of getting sick.

Have a College Student? It’s College Physical Time As Well!

Lastly, immunizations are not just for our little ones. Immunizations are also required for incoming college students too. Make sure you check with the particular school he/she is attending to find out their immunization requirements as they often differ slightly.

The following are the most frequent vaccinations required by most colleges and universities:

  • Meningitis
  • Hepatitis B
  • Influenza
  • Tetanus
  • Diphtheria
  • Pertussis

Also, most schools and colleges require students to get vaccinated for COVID-19. Check with your child’s school to make sure you’re meeting these requirements.
