Common Cold: Causes & Symptoms

The common cold is called "common" for a reason. It affects billions of people all around the world and it is also easy to contract. Although it can occur at any time of the year, the common cold is prevalent during winter. The common cold is caused by the rhinovirus that spreads to hundreds of people within 24 hours, affecting the upper respiratory tract. It comes with a lot of symptoms like:

  • Runny nose
  • Nasal congestion
  • Sore throat
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Body ache
  • Sneezing
  • Fever
  • Decreased appetite

RSV: Causes & Symptoms

RSV is a viral illness also known as Respiratory Syncytial Virus. It shares similar symptoms with the common cold and can be treated at home if the symptoms are mild. An RSV infection takes 2 to 7 days to manifest (this time frame differs in different individuals due to varying immunity.)

RSV is caused by several viruses and can be life-threatening if left untreated.  Here are some symptoms of RSV:

  • Irritability
  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Fever
  • Difficulty in drinking fluids or swallowing meals
  • Wheezing
  • Fatigue
  • Runny nose
  • Breathing difficulties (especially in young children and infants)
  • Blue lips (especially in younger Caucasian kids.) This might not be obvious in dark children.

When to seek medical attention for a diagnosis & treatment plan

Most times, RSV and common cold do not require a visit to the hospital. They are mild illnesses that do not disturb your daily activity. These illnesses require rest, nasal spray, OTC prescriptions, and nasal inhalers. However, they can be deadly if they are left untreated for a long time. Moreso, they pose a risk to young children and ailing adults.

For instance, untreated RSV can cause inflammation of the airways in the lungs, causing bronchitis. It can also cause pneumonia and worsen existing cardiovascular diseases. Children udner two years are at greater risk of developing long-term respiratory disease if RSV is treated poorly. If you discover you have RSV, we recommend you take fluid, preferably water or an electrolyte to provide relief. Also, ensure you are placed in an environment with a proper flow of air to promote breathing.

We recommend you seek medical care if any of the symptoms worsen for immediate treatment. A healthcare provider will assess your symptoms and discern them before providing treatment. Finally, you may be given the appropriate medications and pain relievers that will improve your condition.
