What Should I Know About Strep Throat?

Strep throat is usually a symptom of another medical condition that can make your daily routine harder. Having strep throat usually comes with moderate to even intense throat pain or soreness and may cause significant respiratory irritation. 

Thankfully, strep throat is usually temporary can be easily addressed at home, according to the Mayo Clinic. Doctors and other medical professionals can diagnose strep throat with either a rapid antigen test or a swab test to determine your next treatment options. 

Patients that have strep throat should take the following steps to prevent and manage strep throat and coordinate future treatment: 

Self-care remedies can help alleviate strep throat 

Strep throat can be managed at home with some simple, yet effective, at-home remedies including: 

  • Plenty of rest 
  • Drink plenty of fluids 
  • Gargle with saltwater 
  • Avoid respiratory irritants including cigarette smoke 

In addition, you can prevent the spread of germs or infection by routinely washing your hands, gargling saltwater, and by using over-the-counter relievers as intended. However, if you strep throat doesn’t get better then you may need to visit your doctor for increased treatment. 

Visit an urgent care center or primary care provider to address increased strep throat symptoms. 

In some cases, you may need to consult a medical expert to treat an advanced or aggressive strep throat infection. 

Doctors can usually provide patients with specific strep throat antibiotics that can significantly reduce strep throat symptoms. Oral antibiotics can help reduce a majority of strep throat symptoms if taken within 48 hours of an initial infection. School-aged children may even be able to go back to school if their symptoms begin to calm down. 

For the most part, strep throat is usually an irritating couple of days where rest and taking it easy is usually helpful in addressing symptoms.
