How can you maintain a healthy mind and body? You should play a sport, the benefits go well beyond the fitness. Being on a team gives you the opportunity to develop useful skills like communication, teamwork and discipline. However, before you hit the field, court or pool it’s vital that you book a sports physical. This simple process will ensure that there are no underlying health issues that could put you at risk while you play.

Before You Visit

A sports physical is a straightforward checkup, but there are a few things you can do ahead of time to help the exam move even faster. Bring any required forms, including completed documentation for health and immunization history. We also require documentation from your primary care or treating physician that states any previous heart problems or heart conditions do not impede you from participating in sports. Also consider wearing loose fitting clothing so you can have full mobility during the physical.

*AFC Urgent Care can only verify immunizations administered at our clinics or with appropriate documentation showing your vaccination history.

What is a Sports Physical?

Occasionally referred to as a pre-participation physical exam (PPE), a sports physical is designed to make sure children and teens are healthy enough to safely take part in their chosen sport. In Ohio, student athletes must complete a sports physical before starting a new sport or a new season. While some recreational leagues may not require it, our providers still highly recommend getting one to ensure your safety and well-being on the field or court.

What is Involved in a Sports Physical?

At AFC Urgent Care West Chester – Mason, our sports physicals consist of two sections: medical history and physical exam

Medical History

This part of the exam touches on the medical history of the patient, as well as their family health history. Expect questions about the following topics to be discussed.

  • Family history of any serious illnesses (Cancer, heart disease, respiratory issues, etc.)
  • Previous and current childhood illnesses (asthma, diabetic issues, epilepsy or seizures)
  • Any hospitalizations or surgeries
  • Allergies to medication, food or insect bites
  • Past injuries (broken bones, sprains/strains, dislocations, concussions)
  • Loss of consciousness, dizziness or fainting spells
  • Any chest pain or discomfort
  • Trouble breathing when working out or exercising
  • Frequent headaches
  • Heart problems and irregularities (murmur or irregular heartbeat)
  • Liver or kidney issues
  • Regular medications (prescribed and over-the-counter medications, natural or herbal supplements)
  • Previous and current mental health diagnoses or concerns (depression, anxiety, perfectionism, stress and attention deficits)

Because children may not recall all their medical history, a parent or guardian should be present to help answer these questions. Providers often consider this history the most important part of the exam.

Physical Examination

During the physical exam portion of a sports physical, your provider will do a thorough check of your overall health.

Common checks include:

  • Height and weight
  • Blood pressure and pulse
  • Vision and hearing tests
  • Heart, lungs, abdomen, ears, nose and throat
  • Possible hernia screening
  • Muscle strength, flexibility, posture and joint health
  • Additional tests, such as cholesterol, hemoglobin or a urinalysis (depending on age)

The exam is usually the same for both boys and girls, though providers may ask additional questions depending on whether the patient has entered or completed puberty.

Your provider will also want to know about any medications, supplements or substances being taken. This could include a variety of things from vitamins and protein shakes to weight-loss aids, steroids or performance enhancers. Honesty is very important as these can affect health and athletic safety.

Why Get a Sports Physical Every Year?

Annual sports physicals are an important part of keeping young athletes safe. As kids and teens grow, their health and physical needs can change quickly. A yearly exam helps catch new or developing conditions that could affect their ability to play safely.

At AFC, providers review your child’s medical and family history, look for past or recurring injuries and order additional tests if necessary. For athletes with conditions like asthma, treatment plans may be adjusted to fit the demands of their sport or position. Providers may also share injury-prevention tips, such as targeted stretches or strengthening exercises to lower the risk of sprains, strains and other common sports injuries.

When Should I Schedule a Sports Physical?

It’s best to schedule your sports physical about six to eight weeks before the season begins. This allows your provider plenty of time to evaluate your health, address any concerns, and, if needed, refer you to a specialist or schedule a follow-up visit. Waiting until the last minute can create unnecessary stress and could even delay your clearance to play.

What if There is a Problem After the Exam?

Typically, the provider will fill out and sign the sports physical exam form once the evaluation is completely finished. However, there are times when further testing, another examination or treatment for new medical issues may be required.

Your provider might also suggest particular adaptations, such as, wearing appropriate safety equipment, having epinephrine shots on hand for severe insect allergies, or utilizing an inhaler for asthma.

If your provider recommends any of these modifications or treatments, it’s important to follow their instructions. That way, you can ensure a safe and healthy sports season. Most health concerns won’t prevent athletes from participating in sports, but occasionally they may need treatment and a follow-up exam to play. That’s why it’s important to be aware of any potential issues that may arise after a sports physical exam.
