What is Coronavirus? What Are the Symptoms?
The coronavirus, technical name COVID-19, is an upper respiratory infection in the news for its severity and spread, with cases reported in all fifty states and with over 4,000 in Pennsylvania alone.COVID-19 is a brand-new virus never seen before, with doctors and scientists working to learn more about it each day. Because of how recent its discovery was, a vaccination is currently unavailable. The virus is spread through direct contact and community spread. Knowing how to keep yourself protected and what the symptoms are can be critical to staying safe.
Symptoms of COVID-19 may vary and include:
- Persistent, dry cough
- Fever
- Shortness of breath
- Headache
Symptoms may begin between two and fourteen days after the initial exposure to the virus. However, many cases have not presented with symptoms at all. If you are asymptomatic but experiencing a loss of smell or taste, it could be a sign of the COVID-19 virus. Patients who are asymptomatic are just as contagious as patients with symptoms, which is why social distancing is critical.
Reducing the Spread of Coronavirus
COVID-19 is spread through direct contact and community spread, which occurs when you come into contact with the virus at an unknown time or location. Because so much is still unknown about the virus, taking necessary precautions to prevent spreading it include:
- Regularly washing your hands throughout the day using antibacterial soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. You should also take measures to clean commonly used objects and surfaces, including your keyboard, desk and any food preparation areas.
- Avoid touching your face as much as possible, especially your mouth, eyes and nose. The virus travels through droplets of moisture and can live on surfaces, and touching these areas can lead to exposure and possible symptoms.
- Follow local and state guidelines. Currently the state of Pennsylvania is requiring people to practice social distancing, staying home as much as possible and wearing a mask when out in public.
