The Difference Between STDs and STIs

Most sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) begin as sexually transmitted infections (STIs). An STD develops when an infection has advanced and begun causing symptoms. Whereas an STI is the initial stage, when the virus, bacteria or other microbe has entered the body, but has not caused noticeable symptoms. That’s why early detection plays a vital role in preventing STDs and long-term health concerns from developing.

What Does Treatment Look Like?

We pride ourselves on offering patient-centered care, especially when it comes to personal issues – like your sexual health. In addition to the wide range of STD tests we offer, our health care providers will create a treatment plan that meets all of your needs.

We’ve compiled a list of common STDs and the ways AFC can test and treat each one.

Preventing STDs

STD prevention starts with knowledge and safe practices. Here are some effective ways to protect your health:

  • Practice Safe Sex: Use condoms and dental dams consistently and correctly.
  • Get Vaccinated: Vaccines are available for certain STDs, such as HPV and hepatitis B.
  • Regular Testing: Routine STD testing helps catch infections early before they develop into more serious health issues.
  • Communicate: Openly discuss sexual health with your partners.
  • Limit Partners: Reducing the number of sexual partners can lower your risk of exposure.
