Common Cold Symptoms: What Is Normal & What Isn’t

Runny nose? Raw throat? Persistent cough? Colds usually begin abruptly with a sore throat followed by these common cold symptoms:

  • Nasal drainage
  • Sneezing
  • Fatigue
  • Cough

Typically there is no fever with the common cold. In fact, fever and more severe symptoms may indicate that you have the flu or a bacterial infection and not a cold.

The common cold will typically last for 3-7 days, with the first few days making you contagious and vulnerable. If you are coughing and producing thick dark mucus, then it is important that you contact your medical provider. This could mean you are suffering from something more serious than just a cold, like a bacterial infection.
