Does My Child’s Playground Cut Need Stitches?

From afternoons at the park to backyard playtime, kids are always on the move and sometimes that means bumps, scrapes, and unexpected cuts along the way. While many of these injuries are minor and easy to treat at home, others may need medical attention. Knowing the difference can help you act quickly and confidently when your child gets hurt.

At AFC Huntersville, we’re here to help you decide what’s serious and what can safely heal at home.

Common Childhood Injuries

Most everyday falls result in minor injuries like:

  • Scraped knees or elbows
  • Small cuts
  • Bruises or mild swelling

These can typically be treated at home with simple first aid clean the area, apply antibiotic ointment, and cover it with a bandage.

Signs a Cut Needs Medical Attention

Some cuts require more than basic care. Consider visiting AFC Huntersville if your child’s injury:

  • Is deep, long, or has uneven edges
  • Won’t stop bleeding after 10 minutes of steady pressure
  • Contains dirt or debris that won’t come out
  • Is on the face, hands, or near a joint
  • Reopens after starting to heal
  • Shows signs of infection like redness, warmth, swelling, or drainage

These types of wounds may need stitches or additional treatment to heal properly and minimize scarring.

 When Are Stitches Needed?

Stitches or alternatives like medical glue or steri-strips help close deeper cuts, reduce infection risk, and support proper healing.

Timing matters. Most wounds that need closure should be treated within a few hours, so it’s best not to wait if you’re unsure.

 What to Do Right Away

If your child gets hurt, take these steps first:

  • Apply gentle pressure to stop bleeding
  • Rinse the wound with clean water
  • Remove visible dirt if possible
  • Cover with a clean bandage

If you’re questioning the severity, it’s always safest to have an AFC provider take a look.
