Andes Virus Symptoms vs. Flu Symptoms: What To Watch For

With recent headlines surrounding Andes virus cases, many people are wondering how to tell the difference between this rare infection and something much more common, like the flu. The challenge is that early Andes virus symptoms can closely resemble influenza, especially during the first several days of illness. Both conditions may cause fever, fatigue, body aches, and general flu-like discomfort. However, Andes virus can become much more severe as it progresses, making early recognition especially important after possible exposure. Understanding the similarities and key differences can help you know what symptoms to monitor and when it may be time to seek medical attention.

What is Andes Virus?

Andes virus is a type of hantavirus primarily found in parts of South America, especially Argentina and Chile. It’s carried by infected rodents and can spread through exposure to contaminated droppings, urine, or saliva. Unlike most hantaviruses, the Andes strain has also been associated with limited person-to-person transmission in close-contact settings, which is part of why recent outbreaks have received increased attention. The virus can lead to a serious illness called Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), which affects the lungs and breathing.

Symptoms Andes Virus and the Flu Have in Common

During the early stages, Andes virus can look almost identical to seasonal influenza.

Shared symptoms may include:

     Fever and chills

     Headache

     Muscle aches

     Fatigue

     Nausea

     General weakness

Because these symptoms overlap so closely, many people initially assume they simply have the flu or another common viral illness.

Key Symptoms That May Point to Andes Virus

While the illnesses start similarly, Andes virus often progresses differently over time, especially if the lungs become affected. Symptoms that may suggest Andes virus rather than the flu include:

Severe Shortness of Breath

Difficulty breathing is one of the most concerning warning signs. As the illness progresses, fluid can build up in the lungs, causing chest tightness, rapid breathing, persistent coughing, and severe respiratory distress.

Gastrointestinal Symptoms

Although the flu can sometimes cause stomach symptoms, Andes virus more commonly causes abdominal pain, vomiting, and significant nausea.

Recent Rodent or Travel Exposure

Exposure history is one of the biggest clues. Risk increases if someone has recently traveled to rural parts of South America, stayed in cabinets or poorly ventilated buildings, been exposed to rodent-infested areas, or had close contact with a confirmed Andes virus case.

How the Flu Typically Differs

Seasonal influenza is much more common and usually spreads through respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing. Flu symptoms often include:

     Sore throat

     Runny or congested nose

     Coughing early in the illness

     Fever with body aches

Fatigue that improves gradually over several days

While influenza can certainly become serious, especially in older adults, young children, or people with chronic conditions, it typically does not cause the rapid lung complications associated with hantavirus infections.

When to Visit Urgent Care

Urgent care can help evaluate flu-like symptoms and determine whether additional testing or emergency care may be needed. You should consider visiting urgent care if:

You have persistent fever and body aches

     Symptoms worsen instead of improving

You recently traveled to South America or had rodent exposure

You are experiencing dehydration, vomiting, or worsening fatigue

Providers can assess your symptoms and determine whether referral for emergency evaluation is needed.

Walk-In Illness Testing & Treatment at AFC Urgent Care Elizabeth

At first glance, Andes virus and the flu can look very similar. Both may begin with fever, body aches, and fatigue, making it difficult to recognize the difference early on. However, worsening breathing symptoms, severe gastrointestinal issues, and recent rodent or travel exposure may point toward something more serious. If you’re experiencing flu-like symptoms that seem unusual or rapidly worsening, especially after potential exposure, seeking prompt medical evaluation can help ensure you receive the care you need as early as possible.
