Local Seasonal Allergies Symptoms and Treatment

Can AFC Urgent Care near me help with spring seasonal allergies?

For over 35 years, trusted health care by AFC Urgent Care.

Spring seasonal allergies can be terrible for some people living in the Upstate South Carolina. It is an annual issue that affects thousands in the area, leaving them with common seasonal allergy symptoms of feeling congested and always tired. While seasonal allergies may be impossible to avoid, the experienced providers at your local AFC Urgent Care can help! Our board-certified doctors and medical professionals can help you get through this allergy season.

Is there a cure for spring seasonal allergies?

Unfortunately, seasonal allergies do not have a cure like strep throat or the flu. A seasonal allergy is the result of your immune system overreacting to a common allergen, like pollen. While other people’s immune system doesn’t trigger reactions when exposed to seasonal allergies, your immune system does. Despite there being no cure, there are some simple steps you can take to limit your exposure to allergens. This, in turn, will decrease your allergic reaction to your environment like pollen, dust and dander.

What are things I can do that will have my spring season allergies affect me less?

Don’t make your bed!

A common allergen is living right now in your bed: Dust Mites. These tiny bugs love hiding in your sheets, and when you make your bed, you trap them between your sheets. By leaving your bed unmade, the dust mites will wander off. Airing out your sheets also helps rid you of these pests.

Consume less alcohol.

Recent studies have found a link between seasonal allergies and the number of drinks you have during a week. Try cutting back on nightcaps if you find yourself very stuffy during the spring.

Avoid certain fruit and vegetables.

The protein found in common weeds that cause allergies can also be found in some vegetables and fruits. Tomatoes, melons, and bananas have been linked to these allergy-causing proteins in some studies.

Wash you contact lenses often.

Pollen and other common allergens can become trapped between your contact lens and your eye, irritating it. You should wash your lenses regularly and let them sit next to an air purifier at night.

Wash dishes by hand.

Children’s immune systems are often better when they don’t eat from plates that are not completely sterilized. By giving children’s immune systems a chance to be exposed to allergens at an early age, they are much less likely to develop allergies as they get older.

How come my allergies are worse at night?

There is a scientific reason behind this! Your cortisol levels in your body decrease at night, causing your allergy symptoms to be worse.

I live in the Upstate SC, can I come in for treatment for my seasonal allergies?

If you feel your seasonal allergies are much worse this time of year than usual, please visit our clinic for treatment. You may have an illness like the flu, strep throat, or a sinus infection. These illnesses share some symptoms with seasonal allergies and can be mistaken for a “bad allergy season." We’ll test you for these conditions and see if you are positive for any of them. If you truly are suffering from bad allergies, we can prescribe you some medication to help take the edge off of your symptoms to help you get through this allergy season.

AFC Urgent Care Centers are located throughout the Upstate SC. You can visit our walk-in clinic for treatment of your spring seasonal allergies Monday through Friday from 8 am to 8 pm and on Saturday and Sunday from 8 am to 5 pm.
