Does RSV Cause Wheezing in Adults?

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is often associated with infants and young children, but can also affect adults. One of the hallmark symptoms of RSV in adults can be wheezing, a high-pitched whistling sound when breathing. This occurs when the infection causes inflammation and narrowing of the airways, making it harder for air to pass through. While mild cases may feel like a common cold, RSV can sometimes lead to more serious respiratory issues.

Understanding RSV-Related Wheezing Symptoms

RSV is a common viral infection that primarily affects the lungs and airways. One of the hallmark signs of RSV is wheezing. Wheezing in adults occurs when RSV causes inflammation and narrowing of the airways, making it difficult to breathe and producing a high-pitched whistling sound during exhalation. Adults with RSV-related wheezing will likely experience additional symptoms. It’s important to monitor symptoms closely. Seek medical attention if wheezing doesn’t improve. Early evaluation and care can help manage RSV effectively and reduce the risk of complications.

What Are the Other Symptoms of RSV in Adults?

Besides wheezing, RSV in adults can cause:

  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Sore throat
  • Cough (which may be persistent)
  • Low-grade fever
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath in more severe cases

For healthy adults, these symptoms often resolve in about a week. However, in people with chronic lung or heart conditions, RSV can trigger more severe breathing problems.

How Long Are Adults with RSV Contagious?

Adults infected with RSV are typically contagious for 3 to 8 days, starting a day or two before symptoms appear. However, in some cases, especially those with weakened immune systems, the virus can be spread for up to 4 weeks after infection. Even if symptoms seem mild, the virus can still pass to others through coughing, sneezing, or touching contaminated surfaces.

Can RSV Lead to Complications in Adults?

Yes. While most adults recover without issue, RSV can sometimes lead to complications such as:

  • Bronchitis: Inflammation of the airways (bronchi) in the lungs, usually caused by infection or irritation, leading to cough, mucus production, and sometimes shortness of breath.
  • Pneumonia: An infection of the lung tissue that fills the air sacs with fluid or pus, causing fever, cough, chest pain, and difficulty breathing.
  • Exacerbation of Asthma or COPD: A sudden worsening of breathing symptoms (such as wheezing, cough, and shortness of breath) in asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This is often triggered by infection or environmental factors.
  • Worsening of Heart Failure Symptoms: An increase in signs of fluid buildup, such as leg swelling, rapid weight gain, shortness of breath, or fatigue. This may be due to the heart’s reduced ability to pump blood effectively.
