Joining a sport is a fantastic way to stay active and boost both your physical and mental health, but the perks don’t stop there. Team sports also encourage friendships, strengthen communication skills, and foster a sense of connection. Before the season begins, though, it’s important to book a sports physical. This quick exam helps identify any hidden health concerns that could affect your safety on the field or court.

What to Know Before You Visit

Prior to visiting AFC, bring any required forms, including completed documentation for health and immunization history. If necessary, come prepared with any previous heart problems or heart conditions and documentation from your treating physician stating that those cardiac issues do not hinder you from participating in sports.

*AFC Urgent Care can only verify immunizations administered at our clinics or with appropriate documentation showing your vaccination history.

What is a Sports Physical?

A sports physical, sometimes called a pre-participation physical exam (PPE), is designed to make sure children and teens are healthy enough to safely take part in their chosen sport. In Texas, student athletes must complete a sports physical before starting a new sport or a new season. While some recreational leagues may not require it, our providers still highly recommend getting one to ensure your safety and well-being.

What Does a Sports Physical Include?

A sports physical typically consists of two major parts: medical history and a physical exam.

Medical History

During the medical history portion of the exam, you’ll be asked about past or current health conditions, medications, injuries and any concerns you may have. Providers also review family medical history, lifestyle habits and other factors that may impact your health. Common topics covered in this part of the visit include:

  • Family history of any serious illnesses (Cancer, heart disease, respiratory issues, etc.)
  • Past and current childhood illnesses (asthma, diabetic issues, epilepsy or seizures)
  • Previous hospitalizations or surgeries
  • Allergies to medication, food or insect bites
  • Past injuries (broken bones, sprains/strains, dislocations, concussions)
  • Loss of consciousness (dizziness or fainting spells)
  • Any chest pain or discomfort
  • Trouble breathing when working out or exercising
  • Frequent headaches
  • Heart problems and irregularities (murmur or irregular heartbeat)
  • Liver or kidney issues
  • Regular medications (prescription and non-prescription medications, natural or herbal supplements.
  • Previous and current mental health diagnoses or concerns (depression, anxiety, perfectionism, stress and attention deficits)

A parent or guardian should be present to help answer the medical history portion of the exam, since many children may not know or remember their complete medical history. Health care experts cite medical history as one of the most significant components of the sports physical examination.

Physical Examination

The physical examination is a thorough examination of the patient’s body. External areas of the body such as heart, lungs, eyes and ears are checked. The doctor will also check for any signs of illness or injury. During the physical portion, your provider will measure, test and record several things including:

  • Height and weight
  • Blood pressure and pulse
  • Vision and hearing tests
  • Your heart, lungs, abdominal area, ears, nose and throat
  • Possible hernia
  • Muscle strength and flexibility, posture, joints
  • Cholesterol, hemoglobin count and a urinalysis (depending on the child’s age)

Both males and females can expect the same assessment. However, the provider could also ask specific questions based upon whether the patient has started or finished puberty. Expect questions about any drugs, alcohol or supplements you’re taking to be discussed. This could include weight-loss supplements, steroids and/or performance enhancers.

Why Should I Get a Sports Physical?

Scheduling a sports physical each year is essential, since kids and teens go through many changes as they grow. These yearly exams help catch any new or developing health issues that could impact their ability to safely participate in sports.

During the appointment, an AFC provider will review your child’s medical and family history, assess any previous injuries and order additional tests if necessary. For instance, if your child has asthma, the provider may adjust their inhaler use or treatment plan to better fit the demands of their sport or position. They may also share injury-prevention tips, such as stretches or strengthening exercises, to help lower the risk of sprains, strains and other common sports injuries.

When Should I Get a Sports Physical?

It’s best to schedule your sports physical about six to eight weeks before your season starts. This gives your provider plenty of time to complete a full evaluation, address any health concerns and arrange follow-ups or specialist referrals if needed.

Waiting until the last minute could delay your clearance to play, so planning ahead ensures you’re ready to hit the field, pool or court on time.

What If Something Is Wrong After the Exam?

If everything is normal, then the AFC provider will sign the required forms once the exam is finished. Occasionally, there are times when they may request further testing, another examination, or order treatment for any medical issues revealed during the exam.

Your provider might also suggest adaptations, such as wearing special safety equipment or utilizing an inhaler for asthma.

If your provider recommends any of these treatments or adjustments, following their instructions is vital to your overall health and safety this sports season. A great majority of health concerns won’t prevent you from participating in sports, but every so often, you may need treatment and a follow-up exam to play. That’s why it’s important to be aware of any potential issues that may arise after a sports physical exam.
