What Is Diabetes?

April 30, 2021

More than 100 million Americans have been diagnosed with diabetes or prediabetes. Are you one of them?

While the condition is common, it's not necessarily well-understood, which is why our team at AFC Urgent Care Kingsbridge wants to share some insight on the condition.

What Are the Symptoms of Diabetes?

Every person will react differently to a medical condition, and diabetes is no different. If you have elevated blood sugar—which is known as diabetes—you may experience a wide range of symptoms, including extreme thirst, fatigue, unexplained weight loss or gain, increased urination and non-healing wounds.

Fortunately, there are steps you can take to lower your risk of developing the condition in the first place.

How to Reduce the Risk of Diabetes

  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Eat a well-balanced diet heavy on fruits and veggies.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Move your body regularly, aiming for 30 minutes most days.
  • Find ways to manage stress effectively.
  • Get plenty of quality sleep.

What Is Gestational Diabetes?

Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy. Warning signs of gestational diabetes are similar to other types of diabetes and may include unusual thirst, fatigue, blurred vision, nausea and skin infections.

For most women, gestational diabetes goes away after the baby is born. However, women who have gestational diabetes are more at risk of developing diabetes later on in life.

Ways to Avoid Gestational Diabetes

  • Keep up with healthy habits during pregnancy.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Move your body regularly.
  • Eat a healthy diet, following your doctor's specific instructions.
  • Maintain regular visits with your physician throughout pregnancy.
