Can You Retake a DOT Physical?

February 15, 2023

Department of Transportation (DOT) physicals are medical examinations that commercial drivers are required to pass in order to renew or obtain their commercial driver’s license. DOT physicals are important in ensuring that the driver is mentally and physically fit to operate a large commercial vehicle. The exam typically assesses vision, hearing, blood pressure, and other conditions that could put drivers at risk for injury.

This blog will answer a few frequently asked questions about DOT physicals, including whether or not you can retake it after you’ve failed initially. For a walk-in DOT physical exam, visit the clinic at AFC Urgent Care Paramus today!

What To Expect During a DOT Physical

DOT Physicals are examinations required by law for commercial drivers. The goal of the DOT physical is to ensure that drivers keep themselves and others safe on the road. During the physical, a medical provider will evaluate your overall health and wellbeing. Starting with a discussion of your medical history– including any past injuries, health conditions, or surgeries– and then moving on to a physical examination. The examiner will check your pulse, blood pressure, vision and hearing to determine if you’re fit to operate a CMV. Typically, the examiner will also perform a urinalysis to check for drugs or other substances that could impair your driving.

A DOT physical can vary from person to person depending on age, medical history, and underlying health conditions. Additional testing may be required if the driver has other health conditions present. After the exam, the provider will discuss whether or not you are qualified to operate a commercial motor vehicle.

Can You Retake a DOT Physical?

In most cases, yes– you can retake a DOT physical if you fail it initially. If a driver does not meet the physical requirements to pass the exam, they will typically be deemed unfit to operate a commercial vehicle. If your medical provider determines that a driver is medically unqualified, then that driver will be unable to drive commercially. However, if the driver can address the medical issue that caused them to fail the exam, they can retake it.

For example, if the exam reveals that your blood pressure is too high, you can then go through the process to bring it down and get back on track to good health. Once the medical condition is addressed and treated, the driver can retake the physical exam. Please note that a driver can not generally retake the exam immediately after failing it. They must address the issue and resolve it before retaking. Some conditions may require additional monitoring– such as sleep apnea or diabetes.
