Rapid COVID-19 Testing FAQs:

Q. What is a Rapid COVID-19 Test?

A. A Rapid COVID-19 test is an antigen or PCR test that analyzes the detection of the COVID-19 virus in a patient. Testing targets the presence of genetic material that indicates the virus is active.

Q. How does Rapid COVID Testing Work?

A. A swab is used to take a sample that is then analyzed for determining an active COVID-19 infection. The process takes a few minutes to complete and finalized results are sent to patients on the same day as their visit.

Q. What should I do if I have a positive result?

A. Start quarantining at home for a minimum of 14 days, as recommended by the CDC. Alert any family members or friends that have been in close proximity to you before your diagnosis

Q. What should I do if I have a negative test?

A. Patients with a negative test should continue to follow local health regulations, wear a mask whenever outside, and practice social distancing as need. Return to work employees should carefully determine future risks and test as needed.

Q. Is rapid COVID-19 testing covered by insurance?

A. COVID-19 testing coverage is determined by your health plan benefits. Some patients may not have coverage for rapid COVID-19 testing. Please consult our accepted insurances and see if your health plan offers a testing benefit.

Q. Are there other types of COVID-19 testing available?

A. AFC Urgent Care Worcester also offers COVID-19 antibody testing to determine if you have moderate immunity to the virus.

Q. Where can I get rapid COVID-19 testing near Worcester?

A. AFC Urgent Care Worcester offers rapid COVID-19 testing for patients near Worcester, Shrewsbury, and Auburn, MA. Call our provider team for more details.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

Symptoms of COVID-19 may vary from case to case. Some patients may experience mild to severe symptoms, while other cases have been diagnosed in asymptomatic patients. The easiest ways to protect yourself against the virus are to maintain social distancing and wearing a mask or protective face covering in public areas.

The virus is spread through direct contact with infected individuals and surfaces as well as through community spread, through unknown origin. Symptoms may include:

  • Dry, persistent cough
  • High fever (over 102 F)
  • Recent loss of taste and/or smell
  • Head and full body aches
  • Shortness of breath
  • Congestion

How does the rapid test work?

The rapid test, similarly to standard PCR diagnostic testing, requires a swab to be taken of the nasal cavity.

Patients will be required to wear a mask to their visit, only lowering them when asked for the test itself. For the rapid test, the swab is required to get into the upper nasal cavity to collect a tissue sample.

The process takes only a few moments and while the patient may feel minor discomfort, they will not experience any pain. After the sample is collected, it is brought to our lab on site to be tested. The swab is submerged into a solution that focuses solely on the COVID-19 virus, breaking it apart and exposing the genetic material.

The genome is then reproduced in specifically targeted molecules from the sample, which can detect the presence of the virus, providing a diagnosis. The results will be displayed on the machine and printed, and returned to the patient via a phone call or email that day.

Why should I get the rapid test for COVID-19?

If you have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, wait between 5-7 days for testing to ensure an accurate result. Getting tested during the initial incubation period can result in a false negative result.

The rapid test provides more immediate results, allowing you to change your behavior accordingly.

If you receive a positive result to your rapid test, you should begin self-isolating immediately and contact anyone you may have been in close proximity to in recent days to alert them to get tested themselves. Prepare to isolate for at least fourteen days to avoid infecting others.

If your results come back negative, make sure you continue to follow local health regulations including wearing a mask or face covering over your nose and mouth in public areas and practicing social distancing from people you do not directly live with.
