What Is Strep Throat?

April 30, 2021
If you think the flu virus is the only thing striking in December, think again. Strep throat is also being passed around the West Islip area! Our team at AFC Urgent Care West Islip wants to share some information about this common and contagious illness. Read on to learn more.

Can Strep Throat Go Away on Its Own?

Strep throat is a bacterial infection. When you have strep throat, it is important to seek medical attention so that a physician can prescribe an antibiotic that can help to kill the infection. Although strep throat can sometimes go away on its own, antibiotics are needed in order to help prevent serious complications from strep bacteria, such as kidney inflammation and rheumatic fever.

Symptoms of Strep Throat

  • Pain in throat that comes on suddenly
  • Pain when swallowing
  • Swollen tonsils
  • Red spots on back of throat
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Fever

How Long Is Strep Contagious?

Strep throat can be contagious even before you have any symptoms and will remain contagious until you've taken an antibiotic. Once you've begun your antibiotic as prescribed, you will no longer be contagious after 24 to 48 hours.

Prevention of Strep Throat

  • Don’t handle used tissues.
  • Wash your hands on a regular basis.
  • Don’t share drinking glasses and food with other people.
  • Disinfect commonly touched surfaces often.
  • Avoid contact with those who are sick.
