Keep Your Kids Healthy This School Year

Get Enough Sleep

Sleep is important for everyone, no matter their age. However, as children’s brains are still developing, sleep is even more imperative. Children between ages 5 and 10 should receive around 11 hours of sleep each night. Not getting enough sleep can decrease mood, increase cravings for junk food, and increase the risk of infections.

If your child seems more irritable with no other symptoms, ensure their sleeping environment is adequate.

Exercise

For children, it’s important to receive around 60 minutes of exercise each day. Not all children will have gym class every day, so it’s up to the parent to ensure they get enough exercise. This can also improve the quality of sleep and improve their ability to manage stress. Try going for walks in the afternoon as a family or participating in after-school sports to get their heart pumping.

Healthy Eating Habits

Healthy eating begins with a nutritious breakfast. Make sure your child has enough time in the morning or an adequate breakfast on the go to help jumpstart their school day. Snacks and healthy lunches should be provided, as well as a balanced dinner. Try spending dinner with the entire family, as this can help improve general health and well-being.

Hygiene

When your child is smaller, it’s important to show them how to wash their hands properly. With COVID-19 around, washing hands and avoiding touching their mouth can help keep them from falling ill. Encourage handwashing at home, and they are more likely to fall into the routine during school.

Additionally, be sure your child is up-to-date on their vaccinations. These vaccinations are a crucial way to keep themselves and other classmates from getting an avoidable illness.

Reduce Screen Time

Screen time unrelated to school work should be limited to less than two hours per day. The light emitted from phones, televisions, tablets, or gaming devices can reduce melatonin and alter the sleep schedule. While it may be challenging to keep your child occupied without these devices, try helping them find additional hobbies such as art, sports, or music.

Hydration

Lastly, hydration is key to success. Much like sleep, staying hydrated can improve moods, produce energy, help maintain a healthy weight, and improve brain function. Avoid giving your child sugary drinks such as soda or sports drinks, and avoid anything with caffeine. Water, some juices, and milk are the best options.
