When Should I See a Doctor for a Bug Bite?

Get bug bite treatment at AFC Urgent Care

Summer in Farragut, Tennessee—lots of sun, lots of quick rain storms and LOTS of bugs! It can sometimes seem like you step outside for just a few minutes and wind up with bug bites galore.

But that doesn’t have to be the case. Our team at AFC Urgent Care of Farragut, TN wants to step you through some bug bite prevention and treatment tips.

When Should I Worry About a Bug Bite?

Well, the short answer is: If it’s bugging you (pun intended), stop in for a visit and we’ll take a look to ensure it’s nothing serious. In most cases, a bug bite is just a bug bite.

But if you have any symptoms—such as swelling, redness or pain—that do not improve within a few days, that’s definite cause for a quick visit to our walk-in clinic.

In the meantime, take some steps to prevent bites and stings in the first place.

Bug Bite Prevention

  • Use insect repellent.
  • Don’t swat at bees, wasps or hornets.
  • Wear long sleeves and pants to cover skin, particularly in high grass where chiggers and ticks are common.
  • Do not go barefoot outside.
  • Avoid wearing strong perfume or cologne.

What Happens If I Get a Tick Bite?

Usually a tick bite is harmless, but other times, it puts you at risk of developing certain medical conditions, including Lyme disease.

That’s why it’s important to take immediate action if you notice a tick on your skin. Use tweezers and firm pressure to pull upward on the tick. Be careful not to squeeze on the tick. Doing so can result in parts of the tick staying behind in your skin which can lead to infection and/or disease.

Tick Bite Signs & Symptoms

  • Nausea
  • Weakness
  • A red spot on skin
  • Muscle or joint pain
  • Full body rash
  • Neck stiffness
  • Headache
  • Fever

  • What's the difference between AFC Urgent Care and emergency room services?

Urgent care is for medical conditions that require prompt attention but do not pose an immediate threat to your health or life. Here is a simple rule of thumb: if your medical issues(s) are life threatening, call 911, or go directly to a hospital emergency room. If not, an urgent care center such as AFC is an excellent alternative.
