What Causes Stress Incontinence?
Although stress incontinence can be diagnosed in both men and women, it affects more women. In fact, the American Academy of Physicians states that about 50% of women between the ages of 40 to 60 have some form of urinary incontinence.
The main causes of stress incontinence in women include pregnancy, childbirth, multiple vaginal deliveries and chronic cough.
When Stress Incontinence Occurs
- When coughing
- When sneezing
- When laughing
- When standing up
- When exercising
- When lifting something heavy
Will the Symptoms of Stress Incontinence Go Away?
The amount of time it takes to find relief from stress incontinence depends on the main cause of the issue.
While in some cases Kegel exercises and bladder training can be enough for some people to find relief, medications and surgery might be needed for other cases of stress incontinence.
How to Relieve Symptoms of Stress Incontinence
- Do daily pelvic floor exercises.
- Quit smoking.
- Practice proper lifting form.
- Lose weight, if needed.
- Treat constipation promptly.
- Cut down on caffeine.
