Our team at AFC Urgent Care Bronx Webster Ave. wants to give you a few tips on how you can conquer sports season and keep your young athlete safe from injury!

What Are the Most Common Sports Injuries?

Believe it or not, basketball actually has more injuries than any other sport, followed by football, soccer and baseball. Common sports injuries include hamstring strains, groin pulls, shin splints, ACL tears and concussions.

Fortunately, there are steps you can take to help reduce sports injuries in your athlete this year.

Ways to Prevent Injuries

  • Take time off regularly.
  • Wear the proper, sport-specific protective gear.
  • Strengthen muscles.
  • Increase flexibility.
  • Play safe.
  • Avoid playing when hurt.
  • Use proper form and technique.

Should I Warm Up Before Playing a Sport?

It is definitely a good idea to both warm up and cool down when playing a sport. When you just go out there and play, you are not giving your muscles a chance to stretch. Therefore, you are putting yourself at an increased risk for an injury.

Lower your risk by perform stretching exercises regularly, including before games and practices. Now, what are the benefits of sports?

Benefits of Sports

  • Improved heart health
  • Lowered risk of heart disease, diabetes and stroke
  • Reduced blood pressure
  • Lowered stress
  • Increased self-esteem
