Medical Assistant (Full Time and Part Time)

Compensation: Commensurate with Experience – Potential for F/T

Medical Assistants needed at AFC Urgent Care, a Walk-In Urgent Care Center in Throgs Neck, NY, that provides compassionate, quality medical and patient care in a convenient location. AFC Urgent Care is a unique group of urgent care medical facilities, opened in response to a growing need for immediate physician care in a convenient, comfortable environment. Founded in 2005, our mission is to treat every patient with respect and compassion, and to serve our communities by providing the highest quality medical care.

Objective: Assist physicians in overall patient care, including phlebotomy, lab duties, triaging, greeting and registering patients and handle front office administrative tasks.

Reports to: Physician on Duty / Operations Manager / Center Administrator

Primary Responsibilities (including, but not limited to)

  • Escort patient to room
  • Take vital signs, triage and scribe for physicians
  • Draw blood, specimen handling, conduct tests (CBC, CMP, Urinalysis, Rapid Strep/Flu,Glucose(finger), mono, splinting/strapping
  • Document patient information (Including detailed information for Workers Comp and No Fault visits)
  • Assist physician in every facet of patient care
  • Discharge patients from room with instructions
  • Clean rooms
  • Ensure patient flow is speedy and organized
  • Inventory supplies, replenish supplies when received
  • Assist in maintaining lab and medical equipment
  • Ensure cleanliness of the facility
  • Greet and register patients; verify insurance

MEDICAL SCRIBE JOB DESCRIPTION

Reports to: Physician / Medical Director / Center Administrator

Summary

Scribes are responsible for capturing accurate and detailed information of a provider’s encounter with patients and thoroughly documenting all in the EMR.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Basic requirements before independently scribing with a Provider:

  • Medical terminology and technical spelling
  • Basic anatomy
  • HIPAA compliance
  • Medico-legal risk mitigation
  • Computer aptitude, including functions of the EHR
  • Be able to type at least 60 words per minute with a 100% accuracy
  • Essential elements of documenting a provider-patient encounter
  • General knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of medical personnel

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Accurately and thoroughly document medical visits and procedures as they are being performed by the physician, including but not limited to:
    • Patient medical history and physical exam,
    • Procedures and treatments performed by healthcare professionals, including nurses and physician assistants.
    • Patient education and explanations of risks and benefits.
    • Physician-dictated diagnoses, prescriptions and instructions for patient or family members for self-care and follow-up
    • Prepare referral letters as directed by the physician
  • Prepare work notes as directed by the physician
  • Dictation/faxing/phone calls and clerical tasks.
  • Identify mistakes or inconsistencies in medical documentation and check to correct the information in order to reduce errors. Ensure that all clinical data, lab or other test results, the interpretation of the results by the physician are recorded accurately in the medical record.
  • Collect, organize and catalog data for physician quality reporting system and other quality improvement efforts and format for submission. Assist in developing and maintaining systems to track patient follow up and compliance.
  • Attend trainings on diverse subjects such as information technology, legal, HIPAA and regulatory compliance. Quickly assimilate new knowledge into processes and procedures. Medical Scribes proofread and edit all the physician’s medical documents for accuracy, spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
  • Assist with point-of-care testing as needed, including rapid strep, rapid flu and urinalysis.
  • Direct patient flow for long shifts to ensure that patients are seen in the order they come in and to ensure timely encounters.
  • Speak with pharmacies and field questions professionally, as well as accurately documenting changes in the EMR
  • Help facilitate advanced imaging or specialist referrals
  • Organize medical data for review and interpretation by the Provider prior to starting a patient encounter
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Job Conditions and Physical Requirements

The work environment is an indoor clinical space. The job requires prolonged standing and walking throughout the facility, and occasional lifting of light to moderate amounts of weight when assisting co-workers and patients.

Education and Experience

Availability:

  • Must be able to work 4 weekend days in a 4 week time period
  • Must provide potential available hours outside of scheduled hours
  • Must be able to stay past closing times on busy days of the week in until the last patient encounter is completed and locked
  • Must complete the 4 week Scribe training program before independently Scribing for a Provider. The time frame for this may vary depending upon the experience a candidate has.

PATIENT CARE REPRESENTATIVE JOB DESCRIPTION

Reports to: Center Administrator

Summary

Responsible for greeting patients, creating and updating patient and insurance information in the computer system, verifying and analyzing health insurance benefits, explaining payment policies and billing/collections processes, generating charge ticket information, accepting, posting and balancing cash drawer, scheduling follow-up appointments along with chart delivery and retrieval.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Greet patients in a professional, warm, friendly and calm manner

    • Ensure patients are comfortable at all times. Communicate estimated wait times and manage fast, organized patient flow
  • Register patients’ demographic, insurance and visit information accurately
  • Verify insurance eligibility and benefits, and relay relevant information on benefits, payment policies and billing/collection processes
  • Determine and collect copays, co-insurance/deductibles, past due balances and other patient financial responsibilities and maintain and balance daily cash/credit card/check collections at close-out
  • Confirm discharge summary is complete, patient understands physician instructions, financial responsibility is settled before patient leaves
  • Ensure patient chart/documentation is complete before scanning into EMR system, and file
  • Retrieve and fax/mail medical records to other providers, employers, and insurance carriers per patient request.
  • Answer telephone calls in a professional manner, forward calls or take messages as needed, and return voicemails
  • Assist with scheduling appointments with other providers or imaging facilities, obtaining pre-authorizations for procedures or prescriptions
  • Perform clerical tasks as required
  • Maintains adequate supply of front desk forms, prints copies as necessary
  • Maintain tidiness/cleanliness of reception area, front office area, and restrooms
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Associate’s degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school or six months to one year related experience and/or training. ARRT-registered or board eligible preferred. Medical Assistant Certification or registry, Practical Nursing License, EMT or Paramedic certification or license preferred.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Graduate of accredited program for Medical Assisting or Associates degree (A.A.) from a two-year college/technical school a plus
  • Minimum of 6 months experience in a medical office setting
  • Warm, friendly, positive attitude with excellent patient interaction skills
  • Medical billing experience and a familiarity with basic medical terminology preferred
  • Ability to work independently and with the public in a high-pressure environment.
  • Ability to escort or transport patient by wheelchair or stretcher when appropriate.
  • Ability to work all shifts including, day, night, and weekend hours as needed
  • Must be proficient in the use of computer software. Typing speed above average with accuracy
  • Accurately process money transactions
