What You Should Know About Seasonal Allergy Prevention

We are well into fall where families experience some of the most festive and fun moments of the year!

Unfortunately, fall weather also brings about seasonal allergies that affect millions of Americans. Persistent sneezing, congestion, and runny nose often ruin the fun for allergy sufferers. If you suffer from seasonal allergies continue reading to learn how to eliminate these symptoms.

Avoid Allergy Triggers

The most practical way to avoid symptoms of seasonal allergies is to reduce exposure to the allergens responsible. Triggers may include:

  • Lawn Maintenance- It is best to delegate moving, weed-eating, and gardening to a family member who does not suffer from allergies.
  • Change Clothes- Whenever you enter your home it is a good idea to change clothing immediately. Take a quick shower to remove any pollen that may be in your hair or on your skin.
  • Never Line Dry Laundry- Your clothing will be covered in allergens.
  • Wait Until Afternoon to Go Outside- Pollen counts are the highest first thing in the morning.

It is wise to keep an eye on pollen counts. This warning before the high pollen counts will provide you with the time to medicate before your allergy symptoms are severely affected.

Keep the Air Inside Your Home Clean

Keep the inside of your home clean and free from allergens. Use high efficiency air filters and vacuum floors and furniture daily. It is also wise to invest in a dehumidifier to keep the air inside your home dry.

Try Different OTC medications

There are several types of over the counter medications available to combat allergy symptoms. Within these types are medications with different active ingredients.

  • Antihistamines- Relieve itching, runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing. (Ex: Claritin, Allegra)
  • Decongestants- Relieve nasal congestion. (Ex: Sudafed)
  • Combo Meds- Combine an antihistamine with a decongestant. (Ex: Claritin)

You may have to try several to find the one that works best for you.
