What are Treatment Options for Strep Throat?

Strep throat is caused by bacteria, so the most common form of treatment is antibiotics. In some cases, however, antibiotics may not work. If you are suffering from a sore throat, visit AFC Urgent Care Paramus for testing and treatment. Our doctors can help provide you with treatment to have you feeling your best as soon as possible.

Strep throat vs. sore throat

The biggest difference between strep and a regular sore throat is that strep is caused by bacteria. The most common cause of a sore throat is the flu or another virus. Both can be very painful and make it difficult to swallow. They can also cause a fever, headache, or swollen glands. With strep, you are more likely to have white patches on your tonsils, and they are less likely to be accompanied by other symptoms, such as a runny nose or cough.

At AFC Urgent Care Paramus, we are able to provide strep tests to help determine the cause of your sore throat. This is conducted through a swab, where the sample is then analyzed in our on-site lab. Results are available quickly, and we are then able to prescribe antibiotics or other treatments.

Strep throat prevention

In order to prevent catching strep throat, or another type of sore throat, you can follow the same guidelines. This includes washing your hands frequently, especially before eating, covering your mouth when you sneeze or cough, and not sharing any utensils or any food or beverages.

Treatment options for strep

Antibiotics are the best form of treatment for strep throat. Your doctor may prescribe amoxicillin or penicillin depending on any allergies if the strep test comes back positive. From there, symptoms should begin to subside within two days. With antibiotics, a patient is no longer contagious with strep throat after taking the prescription for 24 hours.

Treatment options for sore throat

With a sore throat, antibiotics are not helpful and will not cure the illness. In that case, using medication such as Advil or Tylenol can help with the pain and help to reduce a fever. Warm liquids such as tea or warm soup can also help to soothe a sore throat. With any illness, getting plenty of rest will help to speed up the recovery process. Be sure to stay hydrated throughout the duration of the illness, and try to use a humidifier while sleeping if available. Dry air can dry out the throat and make it more irritated.
