Safety Tips for Summer 2021

Summer safety can range from a variety of different activities. From food safety to sun safety to hydration, it’s important to be careful and watch your health and the health of others. Follow these tips and avoid any serious illnesses or injuries that can put a damper on your summer plans.

For any urgent medical condition this summer, visit AFC Urgent Care Paramus. Our providers can help treat illnesses and injuries that are urgent but not life-threatening.

Stay Cool

Take breaks from the heat frequently while outside when it’s hot. Find a shady spot to sit under, or go inside where it is cold from the air-conditioner. Wear light-colored clothing to help reflect the sun off of you and wear hats and sunglasses to keep your face covered. Clothing should also be loose and wick moisture to help keep your body from overheating. Staying hydrated can also help keep your body cool throughout the day.

Wear sunscreen to avoid any serious sunburns and reapply at least every two hours while in direct sunlight. Reapply more frequently if spending time in the ocean or pool.

Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of hydrating fluids throughout the day to maintain hydration even if you do not feel thirsty. Beverages that have electrolytes in them can also help you maintain hydration.

Dehydration is a serious medical condition and should be treated as such. It can easily be avoided by drinking fluids throughout the day. Avoid caffeine and alcohol as these can dehydrate you.

Watch for Heat-Related Illnesses

Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are two very serious illnesses related to heat. It’s important to be aware of the beginning symptoms to avoid any serious complications. Symptoms of heat-related illnesses include:

  • Muscle pains or cramps
  • Severe sweating, weakness, dizziness, and headache
  • Confusion or fainting
  • Rapid pulse
  • High body temperature

Use Food Safety

Food poisoning is common throughout the summers due to food not being stored properly or not being cooked to its proper temperature. To avoid food-borne illnesses, be sure to cook meat properly. Avoid putting ready-to-eat food near raw foods, and be sure to wash any fruits and vegetables before eating.

When grilling, be sure to keep the grill away from any homes, decks, and bushes, or shrubs. Don’t place the grill under any trees with leaves. Don’t let any children or pets near the grill, and be sure to scrub off any grease build up to avoid fires.
