March is National Nutrition Month

March is officially National Nutrition Month, which aims to educate Americans about the long-term life benefits of eating healthy and maintaining a consistent and regular exercise regimen. While it can be tough during the late winter or early spring months to find the energy to go outside and exercise or eat healthy foods, positive habits are proven to dramatically improve your overall emotional and physical health.

If you’re like many of us and have abandoned your New Years resolutions, let National Nutrition Month serve as a fresh start, and begin improving your dietary and exercise habits today!

Here are 4 ways for you to celebrate National Nutrition Month:

  1. Drink Lots of Water: Staying well hydrated is proven to help speed up your metabolism, as nutritionists recommend people drink between 3 liters and 1 gallon of water every day. Drinking plenty of water will also help alleviate cramps, muscle soreness and headaches as well.
  2. Exercise Daily: Working out can seem like a daunting task for most people, especially when they equate it with going to the gym. If you’re one of the many who dreads going to the gym, make exercise something you look forward to each day. Try yoga, pick-up basketball, hiking or going outside for bike rides. It doesn’t matter how you exercise, it just matters that you’re working out as often as possible. Due in part to the endorphin release that comes after working out, you’ll feel happier and as your health improves, you’ll have more self-esteem too!
  3. Eat Healthier Foods: Changing your diet doesn’t have to be a drastic lifestyle change. Start by cutting out fast food and frozen foods from your diet. Then, instead of getting takeout, try to cook every night for a week or so. Next time you go to the grocery store, try staying to the perimeter and avoiding the aisles, as this is where you’ll find foods consisting heavily of artificial and unhealthy ingredients.
  4. Be Mindful of Your Eating Habits: Simply improving the quality of the food you’re eating is just one part of the equation, you also have to work to improve your eating habits. This means refraining from eating too much, eating too little or skipping meals, especially breakfast. Eating breakfast actually speeds up your metabolism, which, if you’re trying to lose weight, is overall beneficial towards your goals. Additionally, people who eat breakfast tend to have a higher attention span at their school or place of employment.
