Can Strep Throat Go Away On Its Own?

The flu isn’t the only disease spreading this season. Strep throat is also in the air.

Our team at AFC Urgent Care Levittown wants you to know how you can recognize the symptoms of strep throat, as well as treat your condition so you can get back to enjoying the holiday season with family and friends!

What Is Strep Throat?

Strep throat is a bacterial infection of the throat caused by group A streptococcus.

Because strep throat is extremely contagious, it is important to seek medical attention if you begin experiencing symptoms.

Symptoms of Strep Throat

  • Pain in throat that comes on suddenly
  • Pain when swallowing
  • Swollen tonsils
  • Red spots on back of throat
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Fever

How Long Is Strep Contagious?

Strep throat is contagious until after you have been treated with an antibiotic. Once you begin antibiotic therapy, you will no longer be contagious after about 24 to 48 hours.

It is important, though, that you complete the entire regimen of antibiotics. Stopping an antibiotic early—even if you feel better—can result in the illness coming back.

Treatment of Strep Throat

  • Take antibiotics, as prescribed.
  • Stay away from irritants that hurt your throat.
  • Eat soothing foods.
  • Gargle with warm salt water.
  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Make sure you drink plenty of fluids, especially water.
  • Use a humidifier.
