General Thanksgiving Diet and Health Tips for Families

Thanksgiving is finally here! After a long couple of years, things are starting to feel normal again after covid-19 vaccine rollouts. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of the holiday and put your health on the backburner, but you don’t have to. Using these simple tips will ensure you maintain a healthy lifestyle throughout the holiday season without missing out on any of the fun!

Have a Plan

You can’t control what will be served when you’re invited somewhere else for a Thanksgiving meal. You can control what you do though! Offer to bring a covered dish to the celebration. This gives you the opportunity to ensure you’ll have access to a nutrient dense, healthy option. It also takes some of the stress off of the host! Have a plan before you arrive about how much food and how many drinks you plan to have. Staying conscious of what you’re about to eat will make it easier to avoid accidental overeating.

Stay Active

Just because your diet is a little rocky this time of year doesn’t mean your exercise routine has to suffer too! Aim to get at least 30 minutes of physical activity each day. Your daily ex3ercise can be something as simple as walking around the neighborhood, or as intense as weightlifting at the gym. Stay active through the holidays – you’ll be thankful you did after the holidays have passed!

Make Time for Rest

Rest and relaxation are an integral part of a healthy lifestyle. It’s all too easy to get caught up in the stress of Thanksgiving and forget to care for yourself. Set aside a little time each day that’s just for you. Use this time to meditate, read a book, listen to music, or do whatever you enjoy! Taking a little time each day to recharge will give you more physical and mental energy to actually enjoy the holiday season.

Everything in Moderation

Don’t ruin your Thanksgiving experience by thinking about all the things you can’t eat or drink. Instead, focus on enjoying everything in moderation! A small slice of pie on Thanksgiving isn’t going to derail your diet plan. Allow yourself to enjoy the things that bring you joy, just don’t overindulge to the point of feeling uncomfortably full. The same goes for alcoholic beverages! Having some wine with dinner is no big deal, but you don’t need to finish an entire bottle.

Visit your local urgent care center right away if you start to feel ill after a Thanksgiving gathering. An urgent care center can provide treatment for foodborne illnesses, covid-19 testing, and even your annual flu shot! Visiting an urgent care center requires no appointment and provides you the care you need, at a price that won’t kill your holiday shopping budget.
