Don’t let your allergies be naughty this holiday season

It is the end of November & that means that the holiday season is finally here! During the holidays it is normal for us to go home & spend some time with family & loved ones! The last thing any of us want to do is be sneezing up a storm at the dinner table. AFC Urgent Care New Bedford understands that some people suffer from all year round allergies & also seasonal allergies that start in the winter! We have some tips for you that may make your holidays a little better by beating your allergies!

Don’t wait until you start symptoms

This is a hard one to follow if you have already begun to your yearly allergy symptoms, but it is still useful information to know. A good rule to follow is to start taking your allergy medicine at least 2 weeks before you believe your symptoms will arise. So for example, if you have allergies in December, you should start taking your medication in the last 2 weeks of November. However, if you already do have allergy symptoms then don’t worry, take your medication as prescribed. However, when the symptoms stop continues to take your medicine for another week to ensure that they do not come back.

Be aware of mold

If you find your allergies worse or only existent when you are in your house, then there is a possibility that you may have rust in your home. Mold can grow anywhere where there is a damp area that is warm. Some areas you may want to look out for are:

  • Under your bed
  • The bathtub
  • Corners in the kitchen near the sink
  • Near leaks in the basement

Prolonged exposure to mold can lead to serious health issues, so it is imperative that you check for mold at least once a month in the winter months.

Protect your mouth when doing chores

If you are washing rugs or sweeping inside of the house or racking leaves outside you should try to wear a mask that covers your nose & mouth. Pollen is hidden in dusty areas & when they are being swept up the pollen particles can go into the air which can lead to an allergic reaction. By covering the airways, you are helping yourself by lowering the chance of exposure. We hope these tips will help you have a better holiday season!
